3. VW Bus

4. Mazda RX-7

The VW Transporter is already back.

The Porsche 928, which was hideously expensive to build and plagued with electrical gremlins, is back with a whole lot more rear seat room as the Porsche Panamera (presumably without the gremlins).

The new Ferrari Dino might be considered the hot Ferrari California.

Well, vehicles 1 thru 7 I have owned or driven...

Jeep Comanche? You must be joking! The others I agree, all pretty reliable. In particular the Subaru Brat... small, but a great car/truck.

As a substitute for the Jeep, I would nominate the Dodge D100 series pickups. I had a D150 with a 318, I put over 450,000 miles on it and the guy I sold it to drove it home! Great truck.

Lets see...

1. Mercury Cougar- The 67-70 version that was only slightly bigger than the Mustang. Probably the best looking pony car of the entire era.

2. Jeep Wagoneer- The big Wagoneer, preferably with the pie-plate grill. I hated the woodies. A 3/4 ton diesel version would be perfect.

3. IHC Trucks, Scout and Travelall- Incredibly tough trucks. Maybe a diesel version of each?

4. Pontiac Firebird- This is a no-brainer!

5. Pontiac Fiero- What a fun little roller-skate!

6. Chevrolet Corvair- Unjustly crucified by Ralph Nader.

7. Toyota 4Runner- The original version, 2-door with a removable top.

8. M151 MUTT- The most unstoppable 4x4 ever built. I've seen these things scamper through places where Hummers and Unimogs got bogged down in ten feet!

Can't think of any others off-hand.

Jaguar E type.

Fiat 124 Spyder.

I second the Datsun 510. Simple, economical, quick, fun.

Volvo 740 wagon with a stick shift. The world needs a rear-drive station wagon with a proper transmission. Nobody makes one anymore except BMW, which is too expensive.

The problem with today's cars is that they are so darn complicated and heavy. But would folks really buy these simple cars if they were sold today? They would seem crude by our current standards. I drive classics pretty often and I love their charm, but for a daily driver the car that always starts, with working air conditioning and lights that don't flicker, is often the winner.

They were the specified powerplant in an SCCA Sports Car Club of America spec racer series for a number of years in the late '80's. There were a lot of "used" engines available, most of them very low mileage. They lived well at high rpm and were economical race-wise.

The RX-7 was very nice; haven't been in an RX-8, but I imagine it would be every bit as good, so I'd just accept it as natural evolution. Kind of like how the Datsun/Nissan Z has evolved over the years.

My vote would be for the Ford Contour Sport Edition. The regular Contour was nice but a bit dull; the sport edition was LOTS of fun to drive and looked great outside and even better inside.

Edsel -- so Ford remembers and learns from its boo-boo

Corvair -- so GM remembers and learns from its boo-boo

Avanti -- so Studebacker is remembered for its fiberglass wonder

Plymouth -- so Chrysler remembers and learns that Dodge isn't a low-price marque'

Oldsmobile & Pontiac -- so GM remembers and leans that Buick isn't a low-price marque'

The Corvair was an excellent automobile which was baselessly vilified by Ralph Nader for the sake of writing his book, "Unsafe at Any Speed". The book was filled with lies and distortions presented as fact and which the public swallowed whole and elevated Mr. Nader to the status of folk hero. Remember, Ralph is an attorney, not an engineer.

In point of fact, the Corvair was the most technically advanced production automobile in the United States during the 60s, surpassed only by Chrysler's non-production turbine cars, and with a host of firsts to it's credit.

The Edsel, I have to agree with you was a blunder on Ford's part. Not that it was a bad car, but that it was very poorly marketed. Half a century later, I still see the occasional Edsel on the road.

The swing axle setup was similar in function to the VW, and Mercedes Benzes of that era. The design was corrected in 1964, but it was too little too late. That combined with the success of the then new Chevy II -Nova was the kiss of death. The only passenger automobiles GM produced with out steering column locks in 1969 was the Corvairs. One of the lasting contributions the automotive world received from the Corvair was the Corvair Turbo muffler.

I'd like to see the return of the all-manual 4x4. Manual hubs, manual shift transfer case, manual transmission. These new ones are way too complex, way too much stuff to go wrong.

My grandfather (arguably the best civil engineer in the world in his day) always told me, keep it simple. Simple things are far less likely to break.

Re: The Top 10 Vehicles That Need to Come Back

The keep it simple stupid (KISS) policy is also effective for the vehicle operator.

As an example, in 1982, a certain truck manufacturer did not trust the voltage stability of their own charging system well enough that they equipped every truck with a radio reset switch. Every time the driver of that fire engine had to start his truck, he had to reset the radio power supply, or no radio. In 1998, the same manufacturer did not yet trust their charging system enough to allow a computer interfaced hydraulic system enough to allow starting the truck with the hydraulic system turned on. Just one more step for the driver to do once there is an emergency. Why? This same vehicle has a computer controlled engine, transmission and anti lock brake system. But still an extra switch for the hydraulics.

Consider the simplicity of operation as well. Todays computer controlled engines and transmissions have the ability to prevent stupid drivers from engaging a drive position when the throttle is above a pre determined engine speed. How well does that work for prolonging transmission and drive train life. We all now have a built in engine governor to limit max engine speed. What if the system also has a second engine speed governor that is only activated with the vehicle in a drive position, the brake applied, and 0 vehicle speed. What would that do for transmission life.

These complex systems have the ability to allow stupid drivers like me to drive complex vehicles efficiently.

One of the reasons that automotive and truck computers are so reliable, is because all of the inputs and outputs connected to it are set by the factories, and are designed to work together.

My Dear Bob, I sincerely doubt that you are stupid, though God knows that the world is filled with stupid drivers. Never-the-less, all of these people got by with much simpler vehicles just 4-5 decades ago.

Now please don't get me wrong, I am not one of those "return to simpler times" Luddites. What offends me is having some engineer at a manufacturer try to do all of my thinking for me in advance, and having machinery so complex that I cannot work on it. To my mind, people who cannot operate simple machinery should not try to operate it. That and governments should stop trying to protect people from themselves.

On a positive note, the overall quality of automobiles has improved dramatically in the last 20 years. I am old enough to remember when 70,000 miles was considered to be "high mileage". Now, it's not at all uncommon to see nice condition used cars and trucks with more than 200,000 miles.

The DeLorean was a brilliant concept, an all stainless steel automobile body. Pity the company failed. Not that this doesn't have problems of it's own, such as trying to repair a stainless body panel. And it's also rather difficult to make paint stick to the stuff. Still, I could wish that my Toyota 4Runner had stainless body panels, as it is very rusty.

Peugeot 405 GRi - 2 liters, gas, fuel injection, 5 speed. You may not know them in USA, but good looking, sporty, perfect layout inside, powerful, great fun to drive. Had one in England - can't think of any mass production car I would rather have. Everything went blanc-mange shaped after this.
