The Cell Phone Dilemma

Posted July 09, 2010 7:49 AM

We resist giving up some technologies, like the cell phone, once they're assimilated into our lives. But the potential health risks of cell phones are giving us that dilemma. The first laws requiring display of radiation emissions are in place in California, but confirmation or denial of health effects could take many more years of research. In the meantime, are you ready to limit your use — or not worried about it?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

Exactly what are the risks?

There is no scientific evidence to support RF radiation hazard, yet we need a warning? How many years of studies have we done?

However, I believe that there is tangible and documented evidence to show what the odds are of you getting robbed, injured, or killed to take your cell phone from you.

Why don't we have a warning label for that?

We've been shooting RF energy for a few decades now, and have irradiated many many things. If you stand in front of a weapon system's fire control radar, you're perfectly safe - unless someone turns it on, of course. We know that high energy RF creates cell damage. It seems highly likely that low energy RF will create lesser or different cell damage, and we must consider the length of exposure. It may be difficult to separate the damage from low-level long-term exposure to RF energy from the entropy due to aging, but I suspect if we're careful and honest, we can.

One author (interviewed on NPR) has recently assayed the cell phone radiation studies we do have, and has found a high correlation between the conclusions and the funding of the studies. Those studies that found no threat from cell phone radiation tended to be sponsored by elements of the telecommunications industry. Those that found a potential threat tended to be funded another way.

Is the "potential health risk" due to the proximity of the cell phone as a transmitter, or the emissions from the cell towers? When you receive a call does the signal (depending upon your position and that of the tower) pass through your skull? When you transmit does the signal pass through your skull?

Could a cell phone be engineered to prevent the RF from radiating in the direction of your skull?

Could the tremendous amount of revenue (including tax) bias any research findings?

I suppose I could be wrong, but aren't all cell phone and cell tower transmissions omni-directional; ie, we're all being irradiated all the time?

That said, the only variable is the distance from the transmitter.

If a tinfoil hat does not suffice, use lead foil. But don't handle it too much.

Or lock yourself up in a Faraday cage.

I would pen a letter, but I am afraid the pen would act as an antenna.

If I painted the foil black would it still be effective? Thats how "they" spotted me the last time I climbed a cell tower.

I'm much more worried about being killed by a motorist using one.

As well you should be because there are thousands of cases of car accidents being caused while the driver at fault was on their cell phone. There are no deaths due to cell phone radiation I'm aware of.

Ok....so cell phone radiation doesn't kill you, How do you know? What if the effect is to make you think you are still alive, when in actuality, you are dead?

What about cancer of the thumb joints from texting? Now there is something to worry about!

I reckon half the users are already brain dead - just listen to their loud mouthed intrusive "private" conversations
