Electric Cars for the Mainstream?

Posted July 25, 2010 7:19 AM

High energy, low cost batteries have reached a sufficient developmental point that the technology encouraged another big nameplate, Nissan, to join ranks of auto makers betting on the future of true electric cars — and sooner (2011) rather than later. But how long before power-pampered American consumers accept the higher price and questionable performance? How about you?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

I really want one! I commute 16 miles to work and back every day at speeds rarely exceeding 40 MPH, and mostly in stop and go traffic. It would be wonderful to have a car that I could charge once a week, and never buy gasoline again.

BUT! I drive old cars that I buy cheep and maintain only enough to keep them reliable and safe. I junk them when the repair cost is more than the replacement cost. I don't waste my money on owning a "status" car.

I doubt that I could ever amortize the cost of buying a new Hybrid or totally electric car. Maybe, some day I will buy a used one if the price is right and the maintenance cost is is not prohibitive.

I keep wondering...

Has anyone done an analysis of whether or not there is any real savings of pollutants? I mean, more energy is now required from the electrical grid to supply the energy for cars. Many of the power plants on the grid burn coal. Are electric cars efficient enough to make up the difference? Just wondering.

O.K., O.K., something I can look up myself.

So what do EV proponents say about this?

Probably something equivalent to another ECO-NUTS statement: "I'm against all fishing, that's why I only eat caviar."

I wonder the same thing. Everybody ignores the pollution from the power plants that make the power. And what about the batteries? The manufacture and disposal of them has got to cause pollution too. Somebodies agenda is getting in the way of the truth.
