COTS for Cyber Security

Posted July 19, 2010 7:54 AM

All kinds of off-the-shelf technology — both commercial and consumer — has already been adapted for military projects in the U.S., thereby saving untold dollars. If COTS technology is implemented to fight the cyber war, more savings will be realized. What's your vote: Yes or No?

Huh?

I previously belonged to an Army cyber-defense organization. It's all COTS. You will not find any hardware or software for cyber warfare with an NSN. What's this dude smoking?

One thing to be very aware of is that consumer tech is generally closed box, you cannot fully trust the firmware of some far/near eastern blackbox tech, you never know if somebody hasn't hidden a backdoor or other surprise in there.

Not to mention that most consumer tech is produced at the cheapest price possible, that generally means very shoddy software by inexperienced/lazy coders and borderline MTBF for the nasty cheap hardware. Just remember the scandal and problems with cheap electrolytic capacitors over the last decade or so.
