Is Wireless Steering Us in the Wrong Direction?

Posted August 28, 2010 8:12 AM

Imagine a system in your car that can read a finger when it touches a steering wheel or a mechanism that can detect the presence of alcohol just by hearing the driver's breathing pattern. One New York senator has taken up the cause of having technology like this placed in vehicles and is enticing the wireless industry with $60 million to develop said technology. Those in favor say these systems would make sure that drinkers whose alcohol level is beyond the legal limit would not be able to turn on the ignition. Those against developing this technology claim its presence in vehicles is too big brother, and ultimately creates a nanny state. What do you think?

I just want a law passed that says the senate and the house get the same healthcare, retirement etc. as the general public ... whala

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Government does survey to figure out the decrease in non-government jobs! They say they will need 100 new workers to complete the survey scheduled to run 3 years.

If he's trying to entice the "wireless industry" into designing and building these devices, I would be worried about getting locked out on false positives. Seems like the wrong industry is being targeted here. Maybe I've missed something.

Because there's obviously NOTHING left for congress to think about....it's like faux news...distract the masses with biased news or sideline them with outliers & neglect the main issues that they don't want to tackle for fear of offending some group or another.

My car doesn't have wireless steering, it has power steering.

This response is no more nonsensical than the question.

It's not only too big brother, but it is ludicrous. If a drunk wants to drive all he would have to do is have a sober person start the car. Another down side to this would be for someone who has a breathing problem. What if the car mistakens their breathing for a drunk persons breathing? What else will it be able to do besides detect if your drunk or not? Will it be able to send out a signal reporting your driving habits, such as speeding, running stop lights or even if you're wearing your seatbelt to the authorities? Sounds like a car I wouldn't want to be driving.

And certainly not popular among asthma patients either.

What if a family is camping, the adults have some beers, and a 15 year old girl almost cuts off an arm with an old over-board motor she was tweaking?

So the Millions of us who do not drink, will have to pay for something else. And those who own more than one vehicle are paying for what ... a full time spare? When are the people going to stand up to these fools trying to legislate for some irrational common denominator?

There are laws against driving under the influence. Fix the penal code. Make the offenders pay. I read in the news of people on their 3rd offense. The law needs to be feared. Otherwise, this devise has no merit other than a revenue stream. Don't be a fool and think any privately own gadget can't be bypassed. Criminals don't follow the rules ... DUH!

Bet you that the "wireless industry" are major contributers to the senators campaign fund.

Some things are just stupid at face value ... this is $60 million worth of stupid.

I'm not sure what Read a Finger is implying. If it is to start the car like the key. Then that will be great. Now when someone car-jacks you not only do you lose your car but a finger too.
