What's the Word on Speech Recognition?

Posted September 11, 2010 8:24 AM

Lampooned for years for committing oftentimes comical gaffes when guessing what you're saying, speech recognition technology has recently been making significant strides. Prominent in medical transcription and in many automated telephone applications, the technology has the potential to dramatically cut costs. How will speech recognition affect your job? What aspects of your job could most benefit from it? What have been your hands-on experiences with it? What downsides have you found? Do you see the technology as a threat (displacing jobs in your field), or as a benefit (speeding your work and making it easier)?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

Yes speech recognition is getting better and better. However most of the commercialy available software is focused on dictation and recording large vocabulary in text format. I do believe that that this (dictation) is only one part of capabilities that are achievable. Another part of speech recognition is understanding of short instruction set in system control settings. I would be more interested in having a speech recognition software that could control some basic instructions in my home automation environment then having full on dictation capability. For text recording and translation large vocabulary needs to be loaded in the computer memory and small variation in pronunciation could change meaning of the words and sentences, however in the system control environment vocabulary that is used is much smaller and software should be capable to "understand" instructions even if they are given with high influence of background noise and with difficult accent or pronunciation. Instructions such as "light on-lights of" or "temperature up/down" or "TV on/off" are usually given while walking through the house or socialising with friends or family members. For the purposes of dictation users are usually sitting in office environment with dedicated microphones.

ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE (OR EVEN BETTER - FREEWARE) SOFTWARE THAT IS DEDICATED TO SHORT INSTRUCTION SETS AS DESCIRBED ABOVE????

It's getting beter.

It's getting more widely used.

And it's getting more and more aggravating every frackin' time I run into it.

I hate voice activated / voice recognition systems that so many companies use these days.

I remember in movies, a common phrase between bigwigs discussing business -- stars, big business people, etc. -- "Have your people get in touch with my people."

Maybe the day will come when consumers can let "our machines" get in touch with "their machines."
