Information Sources

Posted November 15, 2010 7:20 AM

The U.S. mid-term elections are behind us, so we can now get on without being told what to think. But, on that topic, just where do we, or should we, get the information we rely on? From a young age, we're taught (or learn through experience) not to believe everything we read (or hear). But what media should be included in our resources? Newspapers, news magazines, TV, trade publications, Internet newsletters, blogs. With too many available, how do you choose your manageable few? What sources do you trust for your daily dose of info?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

CR4 is a good start.

but there are people out there concerned with the same sort of things, and developing responses... trying to create unfiltered news.

There are more. Here is the reference from a recent thread on cr4, providing a discussion forum for public engineering and issues, based on an old roman public forum (agora) model.

I like Fox News. They keep me uninformed and angry about imaginary evils. They also help me vote against my own best interest.

To be fair though, they say that those are only their opinion/talk-show programs, not their actual news programs. However, does their target audience really know the difference between the two? I think not.

Since when can there be "too many available" sources of information? There are certainly many sources out there. That isn't a bad thing, it just helps us to make more information available. I then make a decision about the topic on my own with the information I just acquired from a variety of sources who are credible. Just because information is disseminated doesn't give it credibilty.

We have to decide who has credibility, based upon their track record of observations and comments made. The problem with most traditional news organizations is that they seek to "make the news" rather than simply report the facts. The only job of the news media is to make information available and let the listener come to their own conclusion. It seems like the AGENDA of the people running the news outlets is more important than the facts. They seek to influence people to their side and I think the majority of people see through that and are now getting their information elsewhere. The ratings of CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC and many of the newspapers are tanking because people are tired and skeptical of the SPIN being put on the news.

The problem is that much of our society in America are not very discerning when it comes to what is believed. The general public is mostly like a bunch of fish just gobbling up whatever floats in front of them. They don't think about what is said and what the ramifications are of those statements.

There are many commentators of the news that can also provide insight, Hannity, Combs, King, Limbaugh, Beck and a host of others can make observations but it is incumbent on us to come to our own conclusions, otherwise we are those same "fish" gobbling up whatever is in front of us. It is interesting to note that Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and Levine are hugely successful because they do articulate what many people are already thinking. People vote with their time and resources. Air America etc. didn't make it because they were't able to develope a large enough community of people who supported it with their time and money. That's what free enterprise is about; providing what the customer wants.
