The blogosphere has been abuzz with talk about Microsoft's
latest release for their Xbox 360 gaming console, their control-free, motion-based
system known as Kinect. The system uses a webcam-style add-on that users
control through gestures and other commands.
Although Kinect was only launched early this month, MIT's
Personal Robotics Group has already taken the system further. By hacking the
Kinect's 3D sensor and using it in conjunction with an iRobot Create platform
and a battery-powered robot, the group has created the tentatively-named
KinectBot.
The KinectBot can generate detailed 3D maps of its surroundings
and wirelessly transmit them to a host computer. It can also detect humans in
its vicinity and track their movements to understand where they want to go.
Philipp Robbel, the PhD student behind the project, said
that his research aims to create a team of robots that can work together and
find missing or trapped people.
Do you see potential uses for machines like the KinectBot?
