How Honest Are We?

Posted November 24, 2010 7:29 AM

If you found a wallet or cell phone, would you try to find the owner, or pocket the find? Not trusting answers from a survey, a group of journalists tested citizens by "losing" cell phones in cities around the globe. Before checking to see how the Ten Most Honest Cities did, what kind of return rate would you expect?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

That'll be the regular Reader's Digest Honesty survey then?

Real news: A UK pensioner is hoping someone is honest enough to return the contents of the bag he left on top of his car when he drove away yesterday. The contents: his £80,000 life savings (no, I don't know why he had them in a bag)

GA. That's interesting: in your Honesty link:-

Percentage of lost wallets returned per country:

Norway 100%
Denmark 100%
Singapore 90%
New Zealand 83%
Finland 80%
Scotland 80%
Australia 70%
Japan 70%
South Korea 70%
Spain 70%
Austria 70%
Sweden 70%
U.S. 67%
England 67%
India 65%
Canada 64%
France 60%
Brazil 60%
Netherlands 60%
Thailand 55%
Belgium 50%
Taiwan 50%
Malaysia 50%
Germany 45%
Portugal 45%
Argentina 44%
Russia 43%
Philippines 40%
Wales 40%
Italy 35%
Switzerland 35%
China (Hong Kong): 30%
Mexico 21%

I wonder why Scotland and Wales come out near opposite ends of the survey, or, am I displaying a typical English misunderstanding?

For me, the biggest shock was to see Switzerland near the bottom.

I would never have guessed that.

Rich bankers have been getting a bad press lately, but, on the whole I tend to agree with you.

Measuring honesty at street level is like measuring out comes of elections by counting votes. Ridiculous

What I'm saying is: "if your sister is good looking, I would vote for her"

I nearly said something else but can't compete with your lingo. I'll leave it at that, for now.

Interesting (assuming these are accurate statistics) that despite our "immigrant" heritage, we are tied with the "mother" country which ended up being the founding peoples of our republic... seeing as how there was fierce competition with Spain and France to gain control of the North American continent. Of course, Spain is certainly within the margin of error -- whatever that is in this case.

I hope I would always do what is right and return the lost item, or at least make a good-faith effort to locate the owner. I have been taught "...just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise," (Jesus, quoted in Mark 6:31, New King James translation) and "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Leviticus 19:18, ibid).

When I find money with no practical means of identifying the owner (e. g., a coin on the sidewalk), I know that it belongs to the Creator and Owner of everything, so I put it in the church plate.

Not everyone believes as I do, so I expect a return rate of about 65-70% in my part of the United States, and perhaps 40%-50% in "blue state" areas.

Re: How Honest Are We?

A few years ago, while moving from my old Oakville farm house to my new Flamborough digs, I happened to come across an old primary school report card falling out from behind an old slat bound mirror that was intended to be placed on top of it's companion dresser.

The report card said that the student (in 1922) was a dreamer, and that he should apply himself more steadily towards the subjects presented before him in a timely manner.

I looked up the address of the report card's (Grade III; Wellington County, Cambridge District Public School), owner on 411 (information), and after a lot of long distance telephone calls, at my expence, I finally found a distant relative of, (I think she was one of the grand daughters of the now deceaced) report card owner.

I mailed the report card of her grandfathers to her address, as given and did not recieve even one iota of a thank you, gratitude or anything! I could have easily found such a treasured piece of thier family's history, and could have easily thrown in in the trash, or burned it in my backyard fire pit.

But, no, instead, I really did try to offer the family a treasured piece of history to be perhaps shared amongst the grandchildren.

Alas, I will probably never know what the outcome of the return of an ancient report card, from an obscure school district, without even a hint of gratitude for putting forth the effort to re-unite long lost treasures to ones that should care, but sadly do not.

Hey - it's no skin off my ass - I did the right thing, when I thought that it was the right thing to do at the time, and I did it! - Builds character - right? - Loupy.

Sorry to learn, but, you're a victim of being a member of a previously commonly heralded, but now obsolete condition known as: a person with 'Character .'

"Boo, Hiss, Hiss", is the response upon you from the 'Elitists' within our midst.

But, the VAST number of us 'knuckl'-draggin'-common-folk' know the TRUE meaning of your condition, which is:

'Character': doing the right thing even when no one is looking.

Cheer up!

Life is full of more persons as of YOU, then as those of them!

'Twas said: "Been There, Did That."

1 st if it was got given to you or you had not purchased the item, then it is not yours period. No other way to look at this. Find the rightful owner and return the best possible way.
