Is Your Head in the Clouds?

Posted November 19, 2010 7:28 AM

Wherever you go, you can't escape the ongoing discussion about cloud computing. Offload your data onto the cloud, tap software from the cloud, look at all the capability you can get from the cloud. Yet the caveats prove quite daunting — concerns about privacy, security, attacks from malware, and so on. Are you planning to migrate to the cloud? How? How much of your operation will reside there and how much will you retain in-house? What precautions are you taking to ensure that you will have exclusive access to your software and data and that they are safe? How confident are you that they will be enough?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Engineering Management, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Engineering Management today.

Generally speaking, when one encounters such a flood of "information" about a new technology or any other subject for that matter, it is a very good sign that the promoters are having significant problems selling the idea solely on it's merits, so they have to contract out a lot of PR work just to get some interest flowing. With all the noise available about cloud computing, I am pretty well convinced it is a solution seeking a problem. No, I most likely won't be considering the cloud for much of anything that has to do with real computing...

I laughed that hard I thought I was on cloud nine for a moment. I know what you mean though at least I think I do.

The design program I use daily has recently added cloud capability. Owing to security issues, etc., I've opted not to use 'the cloud'.

Actually, I work with Microsoft machines at work, mac at home, and Ipad Everywhere. Using Apple's MobileMe application (remote servers/cloud to my way of thinking) has allowed me to upload a bunch of my work references in a much easier manner than I otherwise would have had to use the way apple has the iPad hobbled.

(Tho I had figured out a Kluge by using jump drive and ipad camera connector and setting up a DCIM folder on the jump drive so itunes thought I was uploading 'photos')

It was SO easy to show folks at IMTS files using my iPad while walking around instead of being tethered to a booth/pc/expensive rental monitor.

But then again, I'm not claiming that as "real computing"- just tools to use as a metallurgist at large...

I have toyed with parking some finished documents on line (MS Skydrive, Adrive), but I still need a computer to share these with others...Actually moving work from one computer to another, it is easier to use a thumb drive! I don't like the idea of having "unfinished" work exposed to the world...
