Do you ever wish that you could take your television
somewhere with you? If so, then you'll be happy to hear that you may be able to
roll-it up and take it on-the-go in the future. According to a recent article
on Design
News, Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) is working to incorporate
electronics-functions like wiring diagrams, sensors, and antennas into compact
modules that can be produced on a plastic film.
At BMS's Functional Films Research Center in Singapore, the
company is working on polymer-electronics technologies that include
three-dimensional insert molding of polycarbonate films that can be printed
with electronics functions, electroactive polymers, and "Automatic screen
printing systems, additive manufacturing and high-pressure forming (HPF)" that
enable films to be thermoformed with little distortion.
The company says that the polycarbonate films have deep,
glossy finishes that are resistant to chemicals and abrasions. However, they
are currently limited by lack of protective options. Most of the films printed
now only last a short time because air and waste can get into the electronics
and destroy them. New coatings and barrier systems will need to be developed.
Do you see a future for these new films?
