According to a recent survey of 1,022 Americans, EnviroMedia
Social Marketing found that 65% of participants reported that having one label
for "green" products would give them more confidence in buying
environmentally-friendly items.
EnviroMedia reports that it's increasingly hard for
consumers know if a product lives up to its eco-friendly claims. Kevin Tureff,
co-founder of EnviroMedia, says "There are more than 350 labels or seals of
approval that offer to help consumers know whether a product is green or
healthy, which is classic overload for the consumer's brain."
Tureff believes that having one national seal to identify
green products would aid consumers in making decisions, while also holding
advertising firms to a set of defined standards.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is proposing
revisions (.pdf) to its Green Guides, which advise advertisers on making
sustainability claims. However, these changes don't speak to the one-label idea
at this time.
What's your opinion on "green" labeling?
