I agree. I think a lit fire cracker, or anything that makes noise could be placed under a bee colony and elicit a similar response. More bad science.

The short article doesn't say whether the phone was silenced or not. It wouldn't surprise me at all that the RF or other electrical energy in a cell phone bugs the bugs. I know it bugs me when I'm listening to music on my PC using headphones. I can tell when someone nearby is sending or receiving.

China has started using people to pollinate crops, according to a recent TV story. An interesting question is whether the area described was relatively cell-free when the bee population collapsed.

It's a potentially huge problem for us, if bees can't be maintained and managed.
