This Fueling Station Fills Vehicles With Clean Hydrogen From Dirty Water

Posted August 31, 2011 8:26 AM

From Fast Company:

There aren't very many hydrogen cars on the road these days, but there might be soon. And when there are, it will be possible to take the dirty water from your toilet and turn it into fuel.

No, it isn't the water that is turned into fuel; it's the substances in it instead.

Very sloppy! They are really using the methane gas as the hydrogen source.

....which begs the question as to why it is necessary to split the hydrogen from the carbon, as CO2 formation releases energy too.

When I read this kind of foolishness, I suspect its motivated by marketing even if a journalist wrote it.

It makes me want to pick up pen (keyboard?) and write articles that are accurate and clear but not to technical so the general population might understand things like energy without the writers having ulterior motives.

MAYBE ALL FAIR MINDED TECHNICAL PEOPLE SHOULD!!

Argggggh. What journalistic garbage. Poop makes methane --we've known that for decades. Methane is used to make commercial hydrogen -- we've been doing that for decades. So where is the news?

I guess the idea is to add expense and complexity to fueling a car. It's not as if we have a compelling need to free up more CO2, which is what the methane-to-H2 process does. Natural gas works fine as a car fuel, is simple to use, and can be used in a cheap car. The proposed alternative requires numerous process steps, and requires a hideously expensive car to make use of the H2.
