Say Goodbye to Incandescent Light Bulbs

Posted September 16, 2011 7:00 AM

As an energy-saving measure, governments all over the world will soon severely restrict the manufacture and sale of conventional incandescent light bulbs, a technology that has endured for more than 125 years,. Controversy surrounding the move centers on a continuing resistance to the available alternatives. People complain that the light from compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs is cold and harsh, and the bulbs contain mercury. LEDs, the most likely long-term successor, remain exorbitantly expensive for most applications. What do you think of the coming restriction? Will you stock up on standard incandescents? Choose one of the replacements? Which ones and why?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Test Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Test Equipment today.

What will I use in my oven and refrigerator when they phase out incandescents? What kind of bulb will I burn in my well house to keep my pump from freezing in the winter? The new LED traffic lights don't generate enough heat to keep snow from covering the light.I'm gonna stock up on bulbs. I wish the govt would butt out and leave us alone!

If you bother to read up on the topic, speciality bulbs are not affected.

Have fun stocking up and wasting your money.

I think incandescent bulbs won't be banned from using in applications mentioned by you.

Only where it is solely used for illumination indoors like houses, offices and commercial areas replacements will be enforced. For applications outdoors and for heating pump rooms(as mentioned by you) etc it may be allowed.

Can't someone invent a gas or vapour which would give sufficient light when heated by a low-wattage filament?.

Try methane, propane, gazoline vapor...

With the cost of electricity I'm converting everything to LED as quickly as I can afford to. But don't worry, I think you will still be able to buy lamps that are relabeled as "heaters", which is mostly what they are.

In cold climated where you heat your house for a good part of the year, you get a heater that give you light as a bonus...

The governments want us to save energy by phasing out incandescent light bulbs.

How many incandescent light bulbs can we light up with the energy needed to send a crew to the space station?

What about military exercises?

If the energy is so precious and limited, we should re-consider these government sponsored activities.

Also think about advertisement signs burning late in the night, for whom?. Another major consumer is weekly sports activities all over the world as well as tournaments like league matches, world cup etc,why can't they arrange them in the daytime. The organisers should be asked to install solar or wind power at least to compensate part of energy taken from the grid.

Maybe you suggest everyone live in caves and go to bed at dark?

Organizers often do install solar or wind but that is usually just to placate the green idiot bunch.

Re: Say Goodbye to Incandescent Light Bulbs

I am actually saying that large powerful lobbies bully the governments into bullying us into saving a few watts here and there while megawatts are basically wasted by the above groups to push their propaganda. Do as they say, not as they do...

We should let the market decide if we want to save the energy by taking risks on a different technology. Educate people, don't try to drive them like a floc of sheep's.

In colder areas of the planet, where we heat our houses a good part of the year and rarely use air conditioning, the cost of using incandescent light bulbs is almost the same as CFL and even less expensive in some cases. Since there aren't much savings, why should we put up with the lower quality of light, the mercury, the flashing...?

Who are they to impose their (often misguided) will on us?

Most people (the unwashed masses) have no idea and many are not smart enough to decide for themselves anyway. Look at the quack medicines that are popular among many - the bracelets like Shaq wore and people say how wonderful they are to every purpose. Zero proof of working but people waste their money on the things.

Heating - In a single floor dwelling most of the heat is lost as it is one the ceiling. Better to put the heat where it is needed.

Savings are not minimal. The mercury story is a bit laughable if one eats fish.

Much of the guidance 'from above' is bogus but this time - it is correct.

I fear your dastardly plan will run head on into a very serious problem. We've already rendered most of the whales into oil already. The readily available oil that seems most available for a reasonable cost at this time is used fry oil! Try it. you'll like it!

If I do that, it won't be for lighting...it'll be for driving.

Even the Easy Bake Oven has been redesigned without a light bulb! Is nothing sacred to them...

its funny that you have all missed the boat its not the government its the power company that needs these gone !

Incandescent Light Bulbs as well the old style washing machine they were the last 2 that used the grid one for the brightness (60 hz is the spot that glows bright for light in a Incandescent and the washing machine uses the power as a timer) this is the only reason we have 60 hz and 50 hz power. with 2 changes they can make the power more efficient and go to some derivitive of a prime mumber and get paid more for less power.

Yes we are about to get screwed again can you feel it ?

I think it may be something to do with the winter cold setting in.

Some biological process of adjustment to the season change.

Why don't people use two sets of bulbs-energy savers during summer and incandescent during winter?.

This is an engineering site, we see that your statement is based on concepts that you don't understand. What you said is totally wrong. What does the prime numbers have to do with frequency?

Incandescent light are sensitive to voltage (RMS) they work as well on DC and on very high frequency.

Washing machines are not the only devices that use the line frequency for timing purpose. Most electronic devices in the house use it (clocks in VCR, TV, range...) Most electric motors used today are sensitive to frequency.

The utility company would be in deep trouble if they would vary the frequency and it would not change the power we pay for in a meaningful way. The power meters are relatively insensitive to frequency variation.

I have changed all my household incandescents to compact fluorescents. I happened to touch one recently and it seemed pretty hot. I now wonder how much of the touted savings are real and how much are hype. The brand was Philips.

LED lights are not all that bad. Just wish they were not sooo expensive compared to the traditional light bulb. I found a website that lists some benefits of LED lights:

http://www.citek.co.za/info/benefits-of-led-lights

take a look if your interested but im still sticking to the traditional bulbs untill they are eventually not available anymore

Here awhile back I came across an LED shop light that had stopped working and was discarded. I pulled the board with 13 LEDS on it out of light, I then put it up in my laundry room powered from from my solar panels and battery bank. The light it put out puts the cfls to shame and I've decided to replace all of my lighting with LEDS I picked up a roll of 100 off of eBay for $6 or so. You just cut to length.
