Toyota Breaks Compressed Air Speed Record

Posted September 26, 2011 3:42 PM

From Engadget:

Thankfully styled like the more dashing cousin in the typically awkward-looking compressed air car family, Toyota's Ku:Rin (meaning Air-Wheel) has smashed the speed record for cars powered by (not necessarily hot) air.

What a pointless exercise. At least they are honest about the range. The record for a streamlined bicycle is higher, at 82 MPH.

Agreed. BFD. Compressed air is not likely to be the wave of the future for vehicle propulsion. It takes too many bottles, which may be heavy and/or explosive in accidents. Like Rocket Man.

OMG, who designed this thing or was in charge of aerodynamics?! Who ever it was needs to go back to school. I am nowhere near even a novice and I noticed a couple of things wrong. That is a lot of frontal area and not much rear down slope. Turn the driver around to make the front into the rear and it would have a significant reduction in the coefficient of drag. Put something over the wheels to reduce their drag. They always forget to follow the water droplet shape. Hucho would be very disappointed!

If ever there was a pointless exercise. The air is of course not the "fuel" that the article suggests. The fuel is used at the power plant... that supplies the electricity... that runs the motor... that drives the inefficient compressor... that fills the tanks... in which the air cools, loosing even more energy.
