What's Better, Standards in Print or on CD?

Posted October 19, 2011 7:31 AM

The Hydraulic Institute (HI) offers its ANSI/HI pump standards in four formats — hardcopy (in a set of three-ring binders), CD-ROM, secure PDF, and as web-based subscriptions. Which do you prefer, and why?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pump Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pump Technology today.

I prefer any documentation in a digital format where I can do searches and comparisons. Then I can printout just what I need printed.

Its "resource" friendlier as well.....

I prefer electronic as well. Searchable is a big plus. Also my desk is a bit cluttered. Finding room for another book or manual means pulling out the top drawer to use as a desk extension. I can minimize the text while working on something else then go back to where I left off. Besides, there is more room in the computer than on the book shelf.

They both have their place. If used in the field, print may be better. If you know what you are looking for, CD is better. The institute provides the standards in different forms for a reason. Sometimes it can get confusing switching back and forth between screens, especially when working with CAD programs. Although I don't work with hydraulics, I do prefer a hard copy next to my computer when doing CAD. I always end up with sheets of reference material downloaded so I can avoid the endless screen switching.

I deal with a lot of reference material, regulations and legal text. As stated earlier both types have their place. When asked to look something up it is nice to have the book to take to the other persons desk to show or discuss what was found. Electronic format is nice when you know there is a reference but you just can't remember exactly where. a quick word search can save you hours.

In general I prefer print though as I often have to compare two (or more) text articles or a detail on page four can only to be read in referrence to the general heading on page 2 etc. Of course if the company would spring for a second large monitor I might be convinced that it could all be done electronically. Oddly enough the second monitor would cost less than the print versions of most of my material. Penny wise pound foolish as usual.

I think it's best to have the CD and print out the parts you really require to look at often.....
