Guess the Architecture! 9/1/12

Posted September 01, 2012 11:30 PM by Mizuti

Can you figure out where this picture was taken?
Do you know of other structures that use a similar style?
Can you translate the image?

Let us know in the comments below!

The picture is of the ceiling of the Baha'i "House of Worship" located in Wilmette, IL.

The image translates to Yá Bahá'u'l-Abhá (يا بهاء الأبهى "O Glory of the Most Glorious!")...

There are similar Baha'i structures located around the world, here are some....

Australia....

Uganda....

Sydney, Australia

Unless you were actually there, how can you know? You must have some kind of software that analyzes the picture and crosses it to an image on the internet.

Please forgive me if I sound like a wet blanket but, quite honestly, Internet search engines make CR4's Guess the Architecture blog not much of a challenge, really, and unless you're an architect or spend your waking hours between the glossy, expensive pages of architectural references and trade rags and architectural websites, or unless you've travelled the World and the Seven Seas and seen it all, chances are your chances of guessing whatever it is are pretty slim. There's just too much Out There and I'd bet the farm that most people have neither the time nor the considerable wealth required to See It All. For example..

One recent pic appearing here was taken in Edinburgh, Scotland and one of CR4's members recognized it right off the bat, the member having lived there and seen the landmark on a regular basis. Very handy - if you happen to live there. For my part, I've never been to Edinburgh nor to many other places. I love to travel but, sadly, but Life had other plans.

I don't participate in this blog generally. Why not? Because either I'd have to live in the place, know it from my travels or cheat. I cheated, if only to see if I could, and so please do not mark my picture entry as a Good Answer (if you're so inclined), because my name isn't Google Images / Advanced Image Search and this wasn't my guess. Rather, I just pushed the buttons. If I told you this week's photo was taken in Wilmette, Illinois, it's only because I took some computer's word for it and, as a career software developer, I've come to distrust computers more than most.

For my part, I'd much rather see something on par (same flavour, as it were) with CR4's Challenge Question. Something that is accessible to everyone. Architecture, because of its sheer abundance and geographical dispersion, is not.

Cheers!

I just followed your path. The first time using Google Images but I had the answer in four minutes.

Perhaps you could clearly state the rules for us, since you seem to have a thorough understanding of them....

What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to show everyone how smart you are? This was supposed to be GUESS THE ARCHITECTURE, not find it on the internet. All you have done is eliminate all competitors from the game. Please rethink what this forum is about and let others play. Sorry SolarEagle, but it had to be said, like it or not.

I agree with you. The challenge is to actually know, not find it in a web search. Any fool can do that. Sorry, but It means more when it's from personal experience. This is not an "open book" quiz. It's a cheap way to earn points.

Seems awfully important to *you* that you're 'right'. Son, 'right' and a buck fifty will buy you a cup of cheap coffee and that's a fact.

This blog is about the beauty of different styles of architecture....The idea, as I see it, is to discuss these various styles, the influences involved, the people, the time, and the environment....The "guessing game" is just a fun premise of introduction....The problem is nobody seems to want to discuss architecture....There are a few here that prefer to view this as a game, that's fine, but I don't....I'm interested in the architecture....

That's all well and good, Solar Eagle, but what this blog is about was never in dispute.

europium made a valid point - which you missed by a mile (and still do, evidently) - and you came back with an unwarranted, smartass reply to e about rules. And now this? You come back again and drop your 'game theory' on 'a few here' with you cast as Innocent Bystander / Angel of Light / Faithful Guide. Nice try, Bud, but that doesn't wash. If anyone has game-on-the-brain here, it's you.

Face it, son, you're just digging yourself in deeper. You might as well quit while you're ahead. And, you can save your breath: I won't be back. I am unsubscribing from this thread because, quite honestly, I don't like this queasy feeling I have right now that I might be casting pearls before swine. Let's leave it at 'might', okay?

Your pathetic 'anonymous' attempt to talk down to me is laughable.......Just what is it you think you're trying to attempt here? To put me in my place? For what? Answering the questions? Your immaturity is apparent from your posts and your character from your choice of anonymity...

I don't agree with using nasty comments coupled with the post anonymously feature to voice an opinion...

But it might be more fun for others if you didn't post the Google image results right away. We do share the solution within a few days. It might be nice for the community to be able to guess without having the answer visible immediately.

Or, perhaps you could continue to post it, but mark your comment as off-topic so it's not visible?

Your answer is obviously correct. Anyone reading that blog for the first time will accept it is correct and won't bother guessing. Just doing a Google image search and advanced image search will find the image very quickly.

I also suspect the

Certainly, I can not translate it, but I can see the amazing morfological resemblance to another word in another language, probably what you intended to make us fall into?.
