So it is.

What's that doohickey wheel thingy hanging out the back? I couldn't find any technical descriptions for this windmill on the internet.

It's called a fantail.

"A fantail is a small windmill mounted at right angles to the sails, at the rear of the windmill, and which turns the cap automatically to bring it into the wind. The fantail was patented in 1745 by Edmund Lee, a blacksmith working at Brockmill Forge near Wigan, England, and perfected on mills around Leeds and Hull towards the end of the 18th century."

Sweet, a windpowered azimuth drive with auto null detection.

Fantail was the missing link.

I think all wndmills have them (unless they're hand cracked to face wind direction!). They were the prototypes for those used on helicopters....

The Fantail was quite a late development "windmill wise", sometime in the 1700s it is claimed.

Certainly there are many around that still need hand-cranking, especially here in Europe....

I found a great pdf here:-

History of windmills

That has some good diagrams as well as a potted history of windmills, starting in 1,700BC, believe it or not!!!! VAWTs were first!!!!!
