A WW2 observation post, part of the coastal defenses from somewhere around the UK coastline.

Usually found with a collection of dragon's teeth.

The shops were sold out of custard. At one point the entire thing was custard coloured.

It's what the kids build on a rocky beach instead of sand castles.

I thought a previous poster identified it but I can't find that now so maybe I made that up. It's Hermit's Castle in Achmelvich, Scotland. A very unusual single-bed bothy.

(Rather smaller than one might think from the initial photograph....)

Mizuti outed it at #24, and there's a video link at #25. The video rambles otherways a bit, but has some neat shots if you have time to watch.

I've never seen the thing, though if I ever get that far North it will be on the list. It probably smells of sheep **** and so on, but it would be fun to see upfront. I've been unable to discover why the guy who built it simply stayed one night and then left it. The structure has more than a passing nod to the 'pillbox' bunkers that can be found all over Blighty. The 'why' and 'how' escape me. Possibly he just built it for fun - a little bit of eccentricity for others to find and enjoy.

A previous blog entry (not supplied by me) had the 'listening ears' in Kent. I can just about see them from my window. It left me cacking with laughter that somebody in a faraway land would know of these. That's CR4 - you just never know who knows what !

yes I knew that it had been identified...

but never let the facts get in the way of a great idea.

I think it also bears a passing resemblance to the Hitching Stone at Machu Picchu.

(from a certain angle) so what are other influences on the design...

maybe druithin are using the site for sacrifice on the summer solstice... ;-)

Well observed. I wonder if the guy had that in mind - maybe he had at one time seen Machu Pichu, and without realizing had incorporated that to the design.

It's a curious thought why any of us dream up a new idea, it may be down to something we've seen in the past. 'Inspiration' must come from somewhere - an amalgamation of our life experience, an insane dream one night, some event that occurred one day ?

I don't know, but I have a feeling the bloke who built that thing found some joy in doing so.
