Einstein's Math Suggests Faster-Than-Light Travel

Posted October 10, 2012 8:26 AM

From NBCNews.com: Science:

Although Einstein's theories suggest nothing can move faster than the speed of light, two scientists have extended his equations to show what would happen if faster-than-light travel were possible. Despite an apparent prohibition on such travel by Einstein's theory of special relativity, the scientists said the theory actually lends itself easily to a description of velocities that exceed the speed of light.

Why choose the label 'two scientists' (thereby implying their work is science)?

.

Generation of a falsifiable hypothesis and subsequent related experiments are sine qua non for something to be considered 'science', i.e. the work of 'scientists'.

.

I like the term the Brits use, so maybe let's just call it the work of 'boffins'.

You're right, they're not scientists - they're only mathematicians.

Didn't Einstein already consider the possibility of tachyons, which could never have velocity ≤ c ?

Well, Einstein imagined they couldn't, because of the i term in the results.

There was a Professor named Bright

Who travelled much faster than light

He left one day

In a relative way

And came home the previous night.

A mathematician confided

That the Mobius band is one-sided

He said with a laugh

If you cut one in half

It stays in one piece when divided!

-----

A mathematician named Klien

Thought the Mobius band was divine

He said, "If you glue

the edges of two,

You'll get a weird bottle like mine!"

-----

Both suffered from frequent bouts of Tachycardia.

Why not!

Scientists once had proof that the earth was flat and the sun went round the earth.

It's just a question of time.
