Hangover Cures

Posted January 01, 2013 12:00 AM by Chelsey H

Last week I talked about the science behind a hangover and we all know it's pretty easy to have a hangover. But do you know how to get rid of one?

Water. Since alcohol is extremely dehydrating, the best way to not only cure but prevent a hangover is to drink plenty of water. Towards the end of the night start to alternate alcoholic drinks with glasses of water and then have an additional glass of water before you go to bed.

Sleep. Being drunk will severely disrupt your sleep. Drink water each time you wake up and try to sleep as long as you can.

Eat a healthy snack. Most people crave greasy, fatty food in the morning but it's better for your stomach and the rest of your body if you eat something healthier. If you're feeling nauseous, aim for the BRAT diet (bananas, rise, applesauce, and toast). Eggs, crackers, and broth-based soups are also good options because they don't upset your stomach. Avoid dairy products because they can increase nausea. A tip to preventing hangovers is to eat a good meal before going out since drinking on an empty stomach will speed up intoxication and cause an even worse hangover.

Over the counter pain meds. Taking an ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin can help with the head and body aches associated with a hangover. Be careful not to take pain meds while you're still drunk since they can mix with the alcohol and cause dangerous side effects such as liver damage.

Get some exercise (or at least get some fresh air). Exercise stimulates brain activity and releases endorphins, which will improve your mood.

Watch this great video for more tips, and if you're not convinced Mythbusters did some extensive research on ways to sober up fast.

Things NOT to do

Have another drink - Hangovers make you feel terrible because alcohol is toxic. A morning drink could end up making your hangover worse the next day and set you up for alcohol addiction.

Drink a lot of coffee - A cup of coffee may be okay but a lot of caffeine will cause additional dehydration.

Eat greasy food - Your stomach will not be able to process greasy food because it is so irritated.

Here are some hangover cures from around the world.

A guillotine would work pretty well.

Back in the days when I used to indulge to the point of a hangover I discovered that a blast of b vitamin complex helped. What I had was a liquid supplement that was reccomended 2 drops per day on food. I would injest a teaspoonful and in 30 minutes or so my hangover was gone and I felt great the rest of the day.

Many years ago when I would over indulge I found,by accident, that alka seltzer would get rid of a hangover in about one hour, however it was not regular Alka-Seltzer but Alka-seltzer plus cold medicine. unfortunately the type that was used back then is no longer available.

I heard on the news the other day about some study saying asparagus is supposed to do something good. A quick google search turned up a link.

I don't really get hangovers. I did still feel a bit woozy on New Years day.

For a cure, I started with a couple of mimosas, (champaign and orange juice), followed by a spicy Bloody Mary, and topped it off with a couple of Heinekens.

Once the hair of the dog was securely in place, I switched to water for the rest of the day. Ready for work the next day.

As W.C. Fields said, "I exercise moderation and never have anything stronger than gin before breakfast."

My trick to beating a hangover, is to stay two steps drinks ahead of it. If it's gonna get me; it can get me while I'm sleeping.

I'd be willing to try anything. That Mayan calendar thing just about killed me. I'm still unclear as to what to took place and my neighbors are avoiding me, except the old widow across the street. She's dressing kind of funny now. Mrs. Bendover is still finding confetti and little bits of marshmallow. All her Saran wrap is gone and the birds stop chirping whenever I go outside. It's all so strange.

GA. I hate when that happens.

I think I may have done permanent damage, back when we did the Y2K thing.

Y2K. Oh yeah, brother. I walked full tilt boogie, right into a telephone pole on that one. At least that's what the cops told me. Spent the night in Hotel Slammer, courtesy of the local constabulary. At least I had enough sense to walk from one brothel to the next, otherwise I could have really been in trouble. Stupid Screech.

Back in my days of Recreational Drinking, I found that if I had a large glass of water and a couple Excedrins before bed, I'd be good to go in the morning. (Excedrin was/is basically Aspirin and Caffeine) The trick was remembering to do that, after an evening of drinking.

I heard that a few tablespoons of olive oil before drinking would prevent a hangover. I tried a couple dozen raw clams the morning after and it seemed to work. I felt fine after an hour and ready to go for more wine. This was in a country where water wasn't safe to drink (Chile); only wine and beer.

I get a craving for chili dogs and Dr Pepper, the day after a bender.
