Learn and Network at Trade Shows and Events

Posted May 03, 2013 12:00 AM by SavvyExacta

Trade shows, conferences, and exhibitions are gatherings used to present and discuss information about a specific field or the products and services of a particular industry segment. These gatherings serve to be educational, allow competitors and rivals to interact, and announce new products.

Types of Events

  • Trade shows are typically conducted in large meeting halls so that large number of companies can provide displays, allowing visitors to connect with many businesses at one time.
  • Conferences are usually organized and sponsored by trade associations or industry publications in order to present and discuss ideas, technologies, and other topics.
  • Exhibitions feature product demonstrations to debut new products and technologies.

Gatherings may be one of these types or a combination of them.

Event Services

Putting on an event is no small feat and there are a number of service providers out there working to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that there are plenty of tchotchkes to be distributed. Some service providers for trade shows and conferences include:

  • Booth fabrication and setup
  • Logistical services to move materials from one event to the next, and back home again
  • Promotional products creation so you get pens, mugs, and Frisbees to take home
  • Supply and equipment rental
  • Digital signage
  • Staff
  • Internet access and web broadcasting

Physical vs. Virtual Events

Trade shows are typically scheduled a year or more in advance and can range from a handful of attendees and exhibitors to thousands. Shows may be located at hotels, conference centers, or dedicated event spaces such as the Hanover fairground.

Virtual events can be accessed online. They might be live or archived versions of physical trade shows or events that are held entirely online. Virtual events are becoming increasingly popular because they reduce travel and living expenses.

The tracking of attendees has been automated at some physical shows. This information creates leads for exhibitors to follow-up with after the show has ended. Tracking includes visitors to a particular booth and people who attended particular events at the show. It's easier to track attendees at a virtual event, because they usually need to register.

IHS GlobalSpec offers online events and webinars throughout the year. Topics range from trends in laser engraving technology to reducing assembly costs in electronic devices to renewable energy. Eight events are scheduled for the month of May and they are all free!

Do you attend trade shows, conferences, or events? What are the benefits?

IHS GlobalSpec will be at the EDS event from May 6-9, 2013.
