Are You Nomophobic?

Well are you? Nomophobia is something that more and more of us are suffering from. It's the fear of losing our signal, running out of battery or even worse, losing our mobile phone.

According to the web security firm who conducted this survey, more than 50% of those questioned were suffering from or had experienced Nomophobia. The same survey discovered that almost 50% took their phone to the beach whilst on holiday with more than a quarter confessing to checking work emails while they were away.

About 20% admitted that they checked their emails in bed too with more than 1,000 confessing to checking texts and emails while out to dinner with a 'date'. We're not surprised are we? More often than not a group of friends are all likely to be on their Smartphones texting, checking or taking photos rather than actually talking to the person next to them.

The word Nomophobia

The term Nomophobia was coined by YouGov who conducted a survey for the UK Post Office about five years ago. The term officially means anxiety about not being able to use your mobile phone. The use of phobia may be a misconception as the phobia could just be anxiety apparently comparable to 'wedding day nerves' or a trip to the dentist.

Nomophobia isn't gender specific; both men and women suffer from it though men come out with a slightly higher percentage: 58%:48%. More than 2,000 mobile phone users were polled for this survey and most cited staying in touch with family and friends as the main cause of their need to be in communication all the time. Only 10% blame the need to be in contact on work.

How would you take precautions?

If you think you maybe suffering from this condition or fear it wouldn't take much to tip you over the edge, what would you do? Precaution is also said to be better than trying to fix something after the event.

Your signal

Ensuring you have a good signal is unfortunately beyond your control and in the hands of the service providers. You can check the strength of the signal in your area for any provider if you go to the Ofcom site. Don't forget that different service providers have differing levels of signal in different areas too.

With 4G connecting in many areas of the UK now too this can help the signal and certainly speeds up internet connections.

Running out of battery

Simple: carry your charger with you at all times to top up your charge when you get the opportunity. Make sure you ask permission before just plugging into to someone else's electricity supply though!

No credit

You never need to run out of credit as you can top up online - simple. No cause for Nomophobia here.

Loss or theft

Get the last concern covered with a mobile phone insurance policy. And of course learn to really ne aware of where your Smartphone is at all times; this way you are less likely to lose it or have it stolen. Nomophobia sorted.

I don't fear it....... I expect it.

He's funny. I especially like his bit on how people change when they get behind the wheel and become "anonymous". He mentions how no one would say the kinds of things to a stranger's face, that they will direct to them behind the wheel.

No.

In fact sometimes I might 'forget' to charge my phone and the battery will go dead. Or I just shut it off so incoming calls go directly to voice mail and I can have a few moments of peace to myself and others will think I'm in a dead zone or my battery died.

You see, I'm old enough to know what it means to drop a dime on someone and why we "dial" a phone number. I lived more than half my life without a damn cell phone. I do appreciate its convenience but I also recognize that if you are not careful, it can become a burden, not a tool to make life easier.

about 40 years ago they said one of the most rude technologies ever created was the phone. It went on to say. what other device can interrupt you no matter what you were doing, whether it's eating dinner, working out side in you lawn, etc...... and when you heard that phone ring, you dropped what you were doing and you answered it.

So to break this nasty nuisance from getting worse, I treat my cell phone like I treat my landline......... when I had a landline that is.

Now for the most part, I listen to my messages Twice a day, Once in the evening, once in the morning (once in a while). And I don't mind leaving messages, because when I call, its more important than just finding out where you are.

In Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho a lot of the lakes and rivers are in canyons and cell phones usually don't work there. You will see phone booths around. It helps to have a calling card. I got one from my long distance carrier to my land line.

On the Washington seacoast you might be able to get cell reception if you hike about a mile out from the beach. Doesn't work too well at high tide.

I keep a hardwired landline corded phone on my desk. It works when nothing else does. My landline is also my DSL internet connection.

I qualified for a free cell phone. I use it but I don't depend on it. Sometimes I'll switch to my landline to get a better signal. The cell doens't work very well in the dairy department at the supermarket. Too much metal.

Sound like another one of those undiagnosable conditions disability lawyers use to get benefits.

No he can't work because he can't use his cell phone while his at work.

The company were I use to work they employed over 100+.

And each one of usa in the office as well as the leadmen on the shop floor had cell phones..... making us available 24/7 .

Well I had forwarded their number to my personal cell because I got reception.

They gave me a verbal reprimand, and I explained to them that where I lived I do not received their calls, and I am no longer liable for not answering..... they got real quite.......

After a rough week and weekend on a tough start-up that consisted of a 36 hour shift, I did go in on Monday, but on Tuesday I called in sick, ...... they actually send over the salesman to check up, only to find out, I was indeed sick..... exhausted.

I did not go far at that company, because I did not fit into their culture. It would have helped if I was more of a 'Yes, Man'.

Well,

This affliction seems to be purly British.

"Nomophobia' affects majority of UK" per the headline in the article.

I'll rest easier now that I know I'm immune.

Nomophobic - me?- heck no! I only use a mobile phone for emergencies while out riding my bike - maybe twice per year. Last recharge was at least 4 months ago.

However, I am phobic about running out of battery, just not on the phone. I do a lot of bike riding at night on woods roads in the middle of nowhere so my bank of lights are extremely important. ( we have coyotes, coy-dogs, bears, bobcats, etc. in our woods here) What phobia would that be? They have a listed discharge time which is ALWAYS about 25% longer than reality. I carry a back-up and cut the trip down to no more than 2/3 the listed time to discharge and still worry the whole time I'm out riding.
