Do Engineers Make Good Terrorists?

Posted May 21, 2014 10:16 AM by HUSH
Pathfinder Tags: career DEGREE engineers terrorism

So before I incite an online riot, I should note this disclaimer: I do not believe you, sir or madam, are a terrorist.

However, your intrinsic knowledge of technical and mechanical principles makes you about four times more likely to be a terrorist…and therefore I've already submitted your IP address to the Department of Homeland Security. (I'm joking; we all know they don't need the likes of me for such tedium!)

I mean what is "terrorism" anyway? Nothing but a difference in ideals and an enflaming label to rally behind. But the past 20 years has shown subversive rebels in our midst represent a real, dangerous threat to everyone, everywhere-no matter your allegiance or location.

First, the anecdotes. In 2010, several high-profile terrorist acts were perpetrated by engineers. In February of that year, a software engineer crashed his plane into an IRS office. In March, an engineering grad student shot up the Pentagon. May was a busy month, as a network engineer tried to bomb Times Square, and a civil engineer was caught smuggling weapons onto an airliner. Let's not forget the mastermind behind 9/11 was an architectural engineer, and eightof the hijackers were engineers themselves. Lashkar e-Taiba, the Pakistani group responsible for the Mumbai attacks, and Hezbollah, the terrorist organization in power in Lebanon, aggressively recruit engineers to their ranks.

But there is hard data to back up this conclusion. This study reviewed 400 known terrorists from 30 nations in Africa and the Middle East, who had been born between 1950 and 1979. They discovered that terrorists tend to come from prosperous families, are better educated, and are three to four times more likely to have an engineering degree than any other type. And of those radical Muslims born or raised in Western countries, 60% are engineers. Other studies suggest that engineers are likely to have leadership roles in terrorist organizations, but are unlikely to exploit their knowledge when carrying out attacks. This means that the link between engineers and terrorism is based more on an individual's ideological beliefs than a targeted need for knowledgeable individuals.

There are a few hypotheses to explain this link. First, it's likely that engineering jobs in many Middle East countries were scarcer than the individuals qualified to fill them. Unemployment and class disparity quickly leads to civil unrest-remember the Occupy movement? The lone country examined where engineers did not compose a disproportionate number of terrorists was Saudi Arabia, a country where oil riches have indeed trickled down.

Also, in a demographic survey of engineers, it was determined that engineers are twice as likely to consider themselves both very religious and right-wing conservative; 46% of American engineers identify as religious and conservative, compared to 22% of scientists. It's been empirically proven that conservative attitudes prefer questions which provide closure, rather than open-ended challenges with myriad solutions.

In a stark contrast to engineer-terrorists, there is no disproportionate ratio between engineers and communists, anarchists or gang members.

So now it is your turn to weigh in CR4. Do you believe that engineers are more likely to be turned into terrorists? How do you explain the unusually high number of engineering-bred terrorists?

Please remember to be mature and thoughtful in your responses.

"...So they are good in every aspect of life...."

.

Have you really found consistent support for that assertion in your life experience? ....or is this another case where I have failed to correctly identify sarcasm in a timely manner?

Does an engineering curriculum help a person have a broad world-view?

Is it good at improving empathy or compassion? Does an engineering education help a person build personal integrity? Does it help a person evaluate his convictions to see if they are valid?

Does it help him develop a vision of the future world that he is helping to create?

I would hope it would!

We, the public, have been accepting a stereo type of a focused, concentrated specialist driven by project requirements and orders from the boss. We could not have learned to drop napalm without that kind of focus.

I would like to see more faces of good engineers shown to the public. I think they would appreciate engineers more.

And, Yes I think having the skills of a good engineer would be very helpful to an angry, disenfranchised man who needs to have his "Just Cause" heard.

If leaders of nations and their representatives, servants(police, armed forces)&their relatives and supporters do the same(terrorising unarmed civilians not involved in terrorist activities) why you don't call them terrorists(like Saddam)?.

"engineering science arose out of the manufacture and design of seige engines and weapons design, so the field is essential to warfare."

Precisely, which is why we have the term 'Civil Engineer,' which was to indicate that this person was not a Military Engineer. (At that time, the phrase Military Engineer would be seen as a redundancy, like calling someone a female woman.)

Look at the Roman roads that still crisscross Europe to this day, and are still serviceable. Rome had no 'Civil Engineers,' Roman Engineers lead the expansion of the Empire, using the Roman Phalanx as the 'construction equipment' to bring 'civilization' to the 'ignorant barbarians.' Engineers had to know how to build fortresses that would withstand any assault, and know how to breach those same impregnable fortresses.

As to 'do Engineers make good terrorists?' Since terrorism is simply a 'politically/emotionally loaded' label for 'asymmetric warfare,' an Engineer has the SKILLS to make a good terrorist. As to the emotional/ideological makeup, that depends more on the individual and how he/she was brought up.

Personally, I would bring a counterpoint that Statisticians would make good terrorists, as they know how to make any sample pool of data provide results to support any conclusion they wish to make. The sample set in the report the OP cites looks only at 'Islamic Radicals' to determine the 'link' between Engineering and Terrorism, ignoring the larger correlation that 'Islamic Radicals' were overwhelmingly raised under the 'guiding hand' of a Radical, Fundamentalist Mullah. That report is so narrow in its data set, and it ignores the bigger links. It would be like a report of "Why are so many lawyers in the Westboro Baptist Church so quick to sue for civil rights violations on their person?" while ignoring the question "Why is the Wesboro Baptist Church congregation so overwhelming intolerant of anyone not a 'fully vested' member of the WBC?"

Good has many connotations. I suspect they would make effective terrorists. However, the mental discipline might conflict with terroristic motives. If you could make a good enough case for doing something radical they could do it effectively.

The theory being floated around by intelligence analysts is that engineering attracts certain people with a mindset that there can only be one TRUE answer to a problem. A person with this viewpoint can easily rationalize what they are are doing is righteous and true. This especially holds true if the 'engineer' is lacking in social skills or has other cognitive/social impairments. An engineer that is so fixated in this 'one true solution' mindset could be easy to exploit, and given the motivation and assets, could do the unthinkable.

" engineering attracts certain people with a mindset that there can only be one TRUE answer to a problem. "

That's seldom the case, in fact, I would make the argument that the person who believes in one and only one solution to any problem would make a poor Engineer. There are many ways to tackle any problem, many ways to phrase the underlying question the problem is asking. One of the quotes I like to pull out is "Complexity is Nature's way of saying 'you're asking the wrong question.'"

Part of my job involves Machine Vision, and a good lesson to learn from that is "If you have the right lighting for the application, the vision software practically writes itself. If you have the wrong lighting for the application, you cannot 'fix' the image with software filters."

Every problem can be seen as an almost artistic challenge:

"Given a hatchet and a bucket with a 2" hole in the bottom, how may ways can you put out a cooking fire at a streamside campsite in the woods?"

For refusing human rights, if UN says it is "internal affair" & rulers blackmail the affected party by giving false promises, setting religious leaders against them, creating war & chasing them away etc etc what is the solution?

you see, you are equating the UN with something useful, that is a very flawed concept. There are few things in this world that has absolutely no useful purpose, but the UN is definitely one of them.

Too bad the US chose to stay out of the League of Nations, that organization would have had some teeth.

Unfortunately the issue came up right as Women's Suffrage hit, and the candidates were running on the "Join the LoN" platform versus the "Stay out of the Lon" platform, and the pro-Lon candidate looked like a troll while the anti-LoN candidate had the Leading Man/movie star look about him.

Naturally all the women, who were too busy fighting for the right to vote to actually do any research on the candidates, voted overwhelmingly for the 'cute guy.'

It was an honest mistake, I don't blame them, but it still screwed us out of a USEFUL international body to settle disputes between sovereign states.

Im of the opinion that unless there is a true global government, with a standing army capable of defeating any other military on the planet (or perhaps more accurately, EVERY other military on the planet because at some point the nations that oppose the world government's moves will join together to defeat it.), no UN or UN like organization will ever be able to effectively deal with a multiplicity of sovereign nations. All of them will do whatever suits their goals and needs and the rest of them can go hang.

not at all, just pointing out the futility of a global organization that does not have the teeth to make it's decisions stick. but such an organization would be a de-facto world government.

What are differences between UN & LoN. Does LoN represent all linguistic groups (races)in the world,at least major(more than 50 million population)races in the world, unlike the UN in which a race with 1 million is a member but another with 80 million not.

Re: Do Engineers Make Good Terrorists?

You want solutions? Fine let's look at the problem you've described.

1) Outer Elbonia is refusing human rights.

2) UN Declares it an 'Internal Affair.'

3) Rulers of Outer Elbonia (assumed because no other nation mentioned) blackmail citizens with false promises, religious persecution, wars and forced relocation.

Now, Item 3 looks like just a detailed repeat of Item 1, so I'm going to simplify this to:

1) Outer Elbonia is oppressing its citizens.

2) UN decides that this is a problem for the Elbonians to solve for themselves.

One detail is still missing, am I looking for a solution from the point of view of the Elbonian government, the Elbonian people, the UN, or the neighboring country of Left Thumbria?

I'll Try to find a solution from each POV:

The Elbonian government: They are doing what they want, and the UN is letting them get away with it. From their POV there is no problem.

The Elbonian people: There are two ways out of oppression, fight back or get somebody to come in and beat up the oppressor for you.

The UN: The UN has come to a conclusion, "This is an internal Elbonian matter," and consider the issue closed, barring any changes in the Status Quo.

The Thumbrian Government: They can either abide by the UN declaration, or they can launch Operation Nosy Neighbor and Invade/Liberate/Annex Elbonia.

There's a sample set of solutions. I'm not going to go into more detail, it's not my job to plan/fight your war for you. You want help fighting back, look up American History, last quarter of the 1700's. That's how we dealt with an oppression, granted it was an expensive project, and certainly went over time and WAY over budget, but most would say it was a successful completion and worth the effort.

From experience with Pnaban (I'm guessing you guys don't have much) he likes to blame the US for everything, then act like the US and UN are synonymous, which results in (since we all know the UN doesn't DO anything, ever, in which there is the slightest fear of any danger to anyone who works for [Works? Did I REALLY write that in the context of employment by the UN? Whatever was I thinking?] the UN) nothing EVER getting done. This in turn satisfies Pnaban, because it leaves him/her free (nothing I've ever seen of Pnaban's commentaries points to gender. Just an unmitigated and ruling hatred of all things America.) free to continue to badmouth the US, and blame every failure of the UN on the US.

Come to think of it, that's another of his/her foibles. The tenaciously held view that the UN, IF it ever did anything, would somehow be working in the favor of the US. In fact, it seems that Pnaban believes that the favor of the US is exactly WHY the UN never does anything.

Confused, yet? So was I last time I signed off after a long discussion with Pnaban.

He tends to do that to others. He himself is always seemingly confused. He may never be right, but he's never uncertain, about anything.

Why UN coverup crimes committed by state,is that the purpose of UN,can't we dissolve UN and create another organisation where each & every racial(linquistic) group is represented?. At present one community(majority)rules others & UN listens to majority only, whose(foolish)idea is this,is it US/UK oriented?.

Pnaban, Pnbaban, can't you EVER get it through your thick head that the UN IS NOT FRIENDLY TO US INTERESTS?

"whose(foolish)idea is this,is it US/UK oriented?"

This is one of the typically stupid, thick-headed questions you ask, that shows your incredible ineptitude at thinking logically.

IF the UN was a US/UK idea, don't you think the UN would answer favorably to what the US or UK wish to see happen? And when, if ever, can you remember THAT occurring?

I'm almost 60 years old, and can't EVER remember seeing that happen. So what magic 8-ball do you look into?

You remind me of a middle-school Science Fair competitor whose work I once judged. He stated his hypothesis, tested his hypothesis, and in every sense of the phrase, DIS-proved his hypothesis. Then he went on to claim that his data PROVED his hypothesis. Clearly he, like you, had a predetermined goal, and wasn't going to let anything dissuade him.

And as I did with him, I give you all zeros for your analytical powers.

Get real!!

Got the point. Actually, given how confused he already is, I hoped to clarify some things for him. But, a man convinced against his will is a man of the same opinion still. (With thanks to whomever first coined this statement. It is not original with me.)

In fact, that IS the point I was trying to make earlier to several others (#57), so why I would now waste time trying to do it, I can't fathom.

Thanks for bringing back to my senses, and from the brink of destruction.

The whole point of the veto system within the UN is that no one country can steamroller it's will over the others. If you look over the last five years, the number of resolutions proposed by the US/UK that have been vetoed far outnumbers the number that have been passed. And no resolution proposed by the US/UK has been passed without some modification or qualification. Part of what you see as dithering by the UN is the pre-vote politicking that goes on to try to get agreement of all the members so that a resolution will not be vetoed. To get a consensus the resolutions often have their effectiveness reduced. Yes there are problems within the UN. It is underfunded because not all countries contribute the funds that they should, and it's military capacity is reliant on member nations contributing their own troops as the UN has none of it's own.

You appear to be looking at only the Security Council aspect of the UN. The World Health Organization is part of the UN as is the World Food Program, UNHCR and UNICEF. Are all these bodies dominated by US/UK, or is the US/UK just a contributor of a large chunk of the funds.

I'm going to try something that advice from others tells me is foolish: using documented facts to logically disprove pnaban's point.

The UN Security council has 5 'Permanent Members.' these seats never rotate to another country, and they are the ones with veto power over UN resolutions. The Countries are:

The People's Republic of China (Socialist)

The Russian Federation (Socialist, with a little pseudo-Democratic trappings)

The French Fifth Republic (Democratic government, Socialist party in charge for a long time)

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Constitutional Monarchy, if memory serves, the Labor Party [Socialist] has been in charge of the House of Commons for a long time)

The United States of America (Democratic Republic, when 'smoothing out' the policy swings as one party or the other gains majority, the government is pretty much in a state of deadlock, as the conservative, pro-corporation Republicans and the Liberal, bordering-on-socialist-but-don't-say-socialist-or-you'll-alienate-the-rural-population-that-still-hates-the-'commie-socialist-Russians' Democrats tend to use their time when they have control to dismantle the programs the other side set up and try to start their own programs)

Also, let's look at the 'official relations' between the countries and the US.

China: hates the US for not being a Glorious People's Socialist State, but loves to take our money for cheaply made, boor-quality crap.

Russia: hates the US for 'beating' them in the cold war, and 'grudgingly accepts' shipments of international aid.

France: hates the US for buising their National Ego by saving them in two separate World Wars.

UK: Still thinks we're a bunch of uncultured barbarians, but considers our 'brute force' useful in certain places, such as between their troops and the opposing forces.

I know that, but every draft I did with that bit of date also ended up with the 'insensitive' term 'Cheese-eating surrender-monkeys' showing up too. And it's not fair to call them that when the Italians have them beat. Their record in in the past six wars they were in is zero victories and SEVEN surrenders.

But this is getting WAY off topic now, we shouldn't go around ban-mouthing other countries, even if we're talking about two nations that are big on exporting fashion, but seem to have not yet discovered underarm deodorant.

And I'm dropping this line of conversation now before it drags me deeper into the Dark, Bad Place.

The Italians are endearing. We should give credit where credit is due....

I think its the Italian culture that confuses people.

When I had my fabrication and Design business I worked with an Italian, that came over to this country back in 1979 and started it's own Cheese making plant...... now plants.

And I had designed and fabricated process equipment for him worth in the six figures all on a hand shake.

Now the changes on those process equipment as we were building it.... that was another issue......... that was like bartering with him on the streets of Italy on the price of bread........... but once that was settled, the check soon followed.

Nicely put.

However, I take issue with referring to Republicans as pro-corporation. They are no more pro-corporation than Democratic politicians. Republicans have fought this administration and congressional Democrats to protect small businesses from programs such as Obamacare (aka ACA).

Don't get me wrong, I don't give them a pass on other big corporate stuff they support, but Democrats are just as guilty as watching out for big businesses as Republicans are. In the end, a lot of their (Dems and Repubs) funding comes from large corporations. Most big businesses contribute to both parties, that way no matter which one wins, the elected official is beholding to them.

Choosing between Democrats and Republicans for the most pro-business is quite easy.

There are rich Democrats, but it's Republican policies that are generally designed to ensure the rich stay rich, with little consideration for the poor's opportunity to get rich.

There are green Republicans, but it's Democratic policies that tend to emphasize environmental health over "free market efficiency."

I don't know if there are ANY Republicans who support, or are endorsed by, a labor union. But (I bet) the Chamber of Commerce backs a clear majority of Republican candidates and proposals.

Obamacare is little more than a re-writing of the health insurance rules and a huge expansion of the corporate welfare system (donating tax money to private businesses). So you get points for that one, even though you don't want them.

BTW, I've heard that "small business" in this country is defined as less than 500 full-time employees. It's dishonest to lump mom-and-pop operations in with $multi-million firms, but that's the weird playing field we're on.

I think we're getting to the center of the corn maze now, starting to talk about the REAL terrorists, not the ones who merely kill a few people for ideological reasons, but those who kill thousands, tens of thousands, all for profit/power/clout over their 'peers.'

Lynn, if Democrat policies were so great economically why is it that states like Texas are growing like mad and states like California and Illinois and Michigan and NY are imploding? I swear I see almost as many out of state lisence plates these days as I do Texas plates (ok maybe not quite THAT many, but a great number of them.). People vote with their wallet and their feet, and right now those feet are beating feet to Texas.

I wasn't advocating one over the other, just drawing the distinctions between the two. "They're both the same," is just simple-minded, and that's what I was replying to. (I decline to engage on the state-vs-state argument at this time.)

Both are friendly to business, but Republicans are more friendly to business than Democrats.

but being business friendly is also good for the poor since there are more jobs. a rising tide raises all boats. and the best welfare plan you can give someone is a job. and no they aren't both good for business, if that were the case business in democrat controlled locales would be booming. I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest here, I'm trying to show that the idea that the states were economic laboratories is in fact true. And INVARIABLY if a democrat is in charge the economy goes in the crapper. And don't bring out the old saw about Clinton's second term because it was a republican congress that forced his hand. he was fighting it tooth and nail. Newt Gingrich is the one that deserves those kudos, not Clinton.

"That's seldom the case, in fact, I would make the argument that the person who believes in one and only one solution to any problem would make a poor Engineer. There are many ways to tackle any problem, many ways to phrase the underlying question the problem is asking. One of the quotes I like to pull out is "Complexity is Nature's way of saying 'you're asking the wrong question.'"

While I agree with you in principle, through life experience we all know or have known people that are so anal-retentive to them there is only one solution, and they of course have the answer. I've worked for a few of these types myself, something in their character is emotionally stunted and they can only see things one way. They usually become bull headed and will go out of their way to prove you wrong. The engineering field attracts more than its fair share of this kind of personality, these are the types that now pop up on the 'watch out for' radar.

"The theory being floated around by intelligence analysts is that engineering attracts certain people with a mindset that there can only be one TRUE answer to a problem."

Really, I have always felt that there are more than one way to get from point 'a' to point 'b'. How its done is irrelevant, as long as it's safe, it performs, it's reasonable on time and with in the budget perimeters.......

Managing a project you always have three choices,

  • Schedule
  • On Budget
  • Quality

And pick two of them.

Well I'd have to say yes. Based on the fact that most WMDs were in fact "engineered", as were most other weapons that may be used to terrorize. So it's a proven fact!

What about Henry Ford... his contribution and the following iterations are certainly responsible for massive ongoing violent deaths.

What links rising per capita cheese consumption to the number of people who died by becoming tangled in their bedsheets?

Why do murders by steam, hot vapours and hot objects rise and fall with the age of the winner of the Miss America beauty pageant?

And how does the number of films Nicholas Cage appears in each year influence the number of female editors of the Harvard Law Review?

Real world examples of the difference between correlation and causation abound. A classic is that in summer, ice cream sales and murder rates rise. The two are correlated, but it's easy to see that neither causes the other. Perhaps there's a third variable - like hot weather - that causes both?

More seriously, when hormone replacement therapy became commonplace, doctors noticed that women taking HRT seemed less likely to get coronary heart disease. Some doctors suggested a causal relationship - that HRT lowered the risk of heart disease.

Again it turned out that there was a third variable at play. Women who were taking HRT were more likely to come from higher socio-economic groups, with healthier diet and exercise habits. It's this that lowered the risk of heart disease. In the end, other tests showed that HRT actually raised the risk slightly.

A quick search turns up graphs "proving" Facebook caused the Greek debt crisis, or that a pirate shortage "caused" global warming.

Sure, engineers make good terrorists. If you believe that, you'll believe anything.

If engineers & other professionals, politicians, state officials, ambassadors, police, armed forces, clergy, neighbouring country,UN,UK,USA etc support/enforce racism on minorities it is not a surprise f some professionals sympathise with freedom/human rights fighters, whom USA call terrorists. In return all discriminated parties can ask UN to declare the attackers as racists/terrorists.

\What do YOU call someone who would enter YOUR property to cause your family harm, or to take what you have worked for? By your account of that event, there is nothing to indicate you are a terrorist or racist. It is perfectly reasonable for a homeowner to act on the assumption that an unknown person who has entered their home intends to do grievous bodily harm.

In my neck of the woods, if they are in your house without permission, you are on well vetted solid legal ground even shooting them in the back, without checking to see if they have a weapon first, and without making any declaratory statements or demands. It is well understood that someone in your house without permission is reasonably understood to be a threat to your and your family's lives, whatever the ethnicity of the perp.

I'm going to assume he wasn't entering your house to water the plants and feed the fish. It would be highly embarrassing to shoot the neighbor simply because they forgot which weekend you were on vacation.

Who is terrorist?. Aleader passes resolution in UN and attack a nation(flaseflag), prevent few countries from developing nuclear weapons but allows his allies to do so & called a Democrat.Another passes legislation to spy on countrymen, take into custody, torture throw the body or burn & say govt didn't do & called President,Prime minister,Democrat, internal affair,Sovereignty of state etc. In some countries public has no voice but ruled by Communists,Police state,Military rule,Kingdom,Dictatorship but still UN membership given. When human rights are refused, ethnic cleansing takes place, people driven away from home land, having a big list of missing persons, prisoners killed, arbitary arrest/detention in undisclosed locations, racism practiced, clergy used to threaten minorities etc but if USA call the leader "clever" what can mankind do?. Why don't we replace UN with a meaningful "Peoples Forum" representing all major races(more than 50 million worldwide population)?.

Isn't it nice that this site is hosted in a country that still allows freedom of expression to such extent that even very unpopular, hateful, irrational and frequently delusional comments like yours are published?

.

I don't hold out much hope of inspiring you to end your long sabbatical/estrangement and return to terra firma, but I will offer one suggestion: using various designations of 'race' to categorize, organize, and manage people is misguided. The characteristics that are used to note race are rather arbitrary and not helpful.

.

If you can stop seeing groups of people in the same way you might see breeds of domesticated animals, you might notice that the size, shape and color of the body isn't, by a long stretch, the most interesting thing about people. Perhaps when you allow yourself to see with wonder, the beauty of ideas in people, that transcends body type or race, maybe it will spark joy again in your heart. Possibly it wasn't so long ago that you took joy in relating to people and just maybe you can be that way again.

.

It is a genuinely good feeling. Try it out. What do you have to lose?

Panban's stated location is Srilanka. Given how the recent war in that country ended and the subsequent ethnic cleansing in that country, which was both predictable and stoppable, he is justified in ranting at the rest of us for not intervening. The UN is an obvious target, but I don't get why he equates the failure of the Security Council to prevent genocide with US/UK interests. If he is Tamil, he may be feeling guilty that he survived when so many others did not. If he is not Tamil he may be feeling ashamed of the actions of his own government. Much too late, the International Criminal Court (another body set up and operated by the UN) is investigating charging the leaders of both sides of that conflict with war crimes. We all saw it happening, I am ashamed that I did not press my own government to intervene, are you?

The US has allowed the pendulum to swing too far. We spend far too much energy intervening and too little investing directly in ourselves/our future.
