Under Your Home

Have you ever thought about what was under your house? In London, many people are finding still-functioning digging machines in the hidden depths under their homes!

The machinery grave yard (estimated at 500 to 1000 machines to date) is a phenomenon caused by ultra-rich clients looking to expand their homes. Property values and height restrictions have driven the clients to go underground for more space, and the machines used to tunnel for expansion are often too difficult to get out again. The developers would usually use a large crane to scoopthe digger out of the London Earth. But analysts began to calculate the cost-benefit of this procedure, including hiring a crane and closing the street while the crane maneuvered. Since both of these steps are very expensive, developers concluded that rescuing a piece of machinery worth thousands of pounds from a pit under a house worth millions was just not important.

A new problem is emerging now - diggers are encountering their concrete-encased cousins on subsequent excavations.

Can you imagine what future archaeologists will think?

500 to 1000 ?

Short on facts doesn't even come close to describing the linked article. Where/when ?

On our little connection with France, the TBM's were just sent on a nosedive and buried (cheaper than getting them out). 'digging machines' are a fairly new thing - go check out how most of Londons tube tunnels were built. Not with a tunneling machine.

If anybody can list more than 10 examples, Del will shout them a pint of beer.

I have heard of unexploded ordnance buried underground. Large tunneling machines are left underground like in the Chunnel and in Alpine railway tunnels.

Maybe this explains various sinkholes--runaway machinery left cranking underground.

Surely they mean 'still functional'. If they were still functioning the noise would keep people awake!

This reminds me of a large English company with a contract to build a dam in a small west African country. All the machinery needed was shipped out from England and lay ready for use when the contract was cancelled. Shipping the unused equipment back to England and paying tax on it on arrival was worth more than the machinery so the company simply dug a huge hole and pushed all the machines into it and then buried them. They are probably still there though rusted beyond use now. Do not ask me for details please.

That was stupid!

They could have sold them for $1 each and spared all the time, cost, and effort to dig some big hole and then cover it up.

Then what did they do with the machine used to cover up the hole or did they pay someone to rent that?

It was some 40 years ago but from the memory of a now old man I think they set fire to it. The tax laws in England may have made selling them unprofitable.

I looked at all the photos and didn't see any of the digging machines. Unless the one in the fluoro shirt is classed as a digging machine.

I know what's under mine - a lot of dirt, as it is an unfinished crawl space, and dozens of pesticides , some of which are now banned pesticides, in various size and shaped containers. The previous tenants had a phobia about insects, and we found many partially used containers here, in the shed out back, and in the garage out back. I even have some DDT. Oh, they did leave us some useable paints that match wood work and walls in various rooms. And, yes, I did find a digging machine in the shed - they left us a worn out shovel.

Has nobody thought about the other implications of all this?

The ultra-rich are digging out deeper and deeper 'luxury basements' to live in. How long until they dig so deep they don't consider it 'cost effective' to return to the surface every day. Then we'll have this class of people, living underground, making nothing of themselves and consuming the resources produced by those left above....

MORLOCKS!

(For those who don't get the reference, read 'the Time Machine' by H. G. Wells.)

(Even if you do get the reference, go read the book anyway, it's a good story.)
