Have you ever thought about what was under your house? In
London, many people are finding still-functioning
digging machines in the hidden depths under their homes!
The machinery grave yard (estimated at 500 to 1000
machines to date) is a phenomenon caused by ultra-rich clients looking to
expand their homes. Property values and height restrictions have driven the
clients to go underground for more space, and the machines used to tunnel for
expansion are often too difficult to get out again. Image Credit: WebUrbanist
The developers would usually use a large crane to
scoopthe digger out of the London Earth. But analysts began to calculate the
cost-benefit of this procedure, including hiring a crane and closing the street
while the crane maneuvered. Since both of these steps are very expensive,
developers concluded that rescuing a piece of machinery worth thousands of
pounds from a pit under a house worth millions was just not important.
A new problem is emerging now - diggers are encountering
their concrete-encased cousins on subsequent excavations.
Can you imagine what future archaeologists will think?
