Water Upgrades are a Boom to Economy

Posted November 02, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Water infrastructure upgrades mean more than just safe and efficient collection, treatment, and distribution of water and waste: the upgrades are a major job creator. A new report found that 30 U.S. water and wastewater utilities - serving about 25% of the U.S. population - plan to invest approximately $23 billion annually over the next decade for upgrades, generating more than half a trillion dollars in revenue and supporting 289,000 jobs. The mayor of San Diego said that water infrastructure investment is critical and that his town is undergoing major rebuilding of wastewater and drinking water facilities. WaterWorld, in a story about one valve upgrade, reported that the city imports 9 of 10 gallons of drinking water from Northern California.

It's "boon", not "boom".

Unless the economy is going to blow up because of them.

No gents, if we delay it another year, we save $23m. But, we make another billion just by letting it rain next year. and selling more Coke Cola to the remaining thirsty 75%.

If our political system allows it to be so. Taxes are involved here and the general public seldom sees that paying a bit more tax now means economic growth and eventually leads to more personal income. That's why the infrastructure is going into the crapper - no money for upgrades. They prefer to wait until the water/sewer system fails and then grudgingly allocate even more money to be spent to make emergency spot repairs and then rebuild. Then the local government is blamed for not keeping the pipes and such in good repair.

Now that Stimulus I, II, and III have fixed all of the roads and bridges, it seems like a logical next step in shovel ready job creation.
