If artificial leaves make you think only of silk flowers, think again. A few years ago, researchers developed a small photovoltaic device that functions like a traditional solar cell, absorbing sunlight and emitting electrons. It could also be used in water to break the bonds between hydrogen and oxygen, producing hydrogen gas - another promising source of fuel. Unfortunately, the "artificial leaves" began to corrode after only 10 hrs underwater. Learn how researchers used coatings to make the device corrosion resistant without inhibiting its water-splitting capabilities.
