Just What the Doctor Ordered

Posted June 25, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Thanks to innovative coatings, medical implants and devices are less invasive, less painful, and more functional. Scientists at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland are developing a coating that will make urinary catheters more slippery. The coated catheters also stay lubricated for a longer period of time compared to the polyvinyl pyrrolidone devices currently used, making them easier to remove. At the University of Akron, researchers are experimenting with a biologically compatible polymer coating that will reduce the likelihood of rejection, enabling the use of implanted sensors to monitor biological markers like blood sugar or trigger the release of medications from a drug delivery system.

It is invasive once the skin is punctured and penetrated! It may be less painful during insertion to an individual and that's not guaranteed either since pain threshold varies from person to person also! Biological compatibility of the material composition to prevent and minimize allergic reactions is of utmost importance for the patients! While ease of use for the clinical people should be considered, it should be the last thing for any manufacturer..

I agree with you!

But the bottom line still rules, Money is the first consideration in almost any enterprise because lets face it if the manufacturer can't make a buck on it why produce it?

I hate that this is the reality but the truth is the truth.

I still say they cured cancer years ago but the profits on medicines and treatments are too good to pass up. JMHO
