Simple Coating Promotes Carbon Capture

Posted October 16, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Scientists say "it's all about surface area," when it comes to their new baking soda-based carbon capture breakthrough. The team developed a new type of carbon capture media composed of core-shell microcapsules. The microcapsules consist of a highly permeable polymer shell and a fluid made up of a sodium carbonate solution that reacts with and absorbs CO₂. The polymer holds the sodium carbonate droplets in place, forcing them to take the shape of tiny droplets that have a large surface area compared to their weight. This allows the droplets to react quickly with the CO₂ gas passing through the polymer shell, effectively trapping it in the capsule.

If you want surface area, the best way to capture carbon is to install vast arrays of solar powered cellulosic generators. They operate virtually maintenance free for many decades or more and can be installed by minimally trained personnel. The emissions of these generators help us breathe and the other by-products can be used for many useful products.
