Bioengineers Streamline Process for Making Medical App Sensors

Posted December 16, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego, have developed a method that reduces the time needed to make high-tech flexible sensors for medical applications, bringing them closer to mass-market manufacturing. Using a silicon-like elastomer coating, the team builds the gold and chromium sensors on the surface of a silicon wafer. The elastomer is sticky enough to support the sensor's components as it is being built, but can be easily peeled off the wafer surface. The new fabrication process can even been used on curved surfaces, making the manufacturing akin to printing.
