"Hello, m'am, this is the repair shop. I have 1 bit of bad news, and 2 bits of good news.

First, the good news: Your brakes just need new pads. And we made an adjustment to your car that will make it easier to change the oil.

Now for the bad news..."

Bubba, the new mechanic had never seen an optical limit switch, and he thought that little doo-dad would be a good place to hang his shop rag while he put the car up on the lift.

Bubba is looking for another job now.

We put your car on the rack and we found a few problems that need fixing...

Bent frame, doors need replacing, roof panel needs replacing, broken windows, all wheels need alignment. The good news is that it passed emissions test. It will be about 13,000 dollars if you'll sign here.

Clearly photoshopped but still funny!

Some years ago a buddy of mine took one of his POS cars into a shop for work and actually did have a similar experience.

The underside of his car was so rusted out that when they went to lift it the lift went up about a foot but the car only went about six inches. And that was going to be his next good driving around car!

Re: Caption This for 04/24/15

For those who might not get the reference:

  • The paint job on the building identifies it as a CarMax Center (it's a big used-car dealership chain)
  • With games that use stats to track character abilities, some players will shift points around, minimizing abilities they don't intend to use, while maximizing abilities they will use constantly, often ending up with rediculus combinations that abuse the rules(1). This technique is called 'Min-Maxing' by gamers, and is considered 'rude, inconsiderate of the fellow players, and generally childish.'(2)
  • So here we have a CarMax that is minimizing a car.(3)

Notes:

  1. For example, setting up a football roster where the Defensive line is incredibly good at stopping run plays and making interceptions, while the Offensive line is only good at one thing: punting. The team's strategy consists of stopping the opposing team's advance until they get the ball, then punting the ball downfield the moment they get possession, moving the line of scrimmage back and giving the ball back to the other team. Repeat until you drive the other team back far enough to get points for a 'Safety' (tackling the opposing team in their own end zone) or until the time clock runs out.
  2. There is a common term for that long phrase, but as it uses vulgar terms, i am reluctant to use it in a public forum. It could be considered a diminuative version of the phrase 'Richard move.'
  3. And that's why humor fails: Don't, ah say, don't explain the joke, boy.

I also guess that you are talking about American football, the one with the funny shaped ball that you carry around.

Re: Caption This for 04/24/15

Of course, if I was talking about the 'other' football, I'd call it soccer.

It'd be strange if I called it 'American Football.'

Do Italians call their pasta 'Italian Spaggetti?'

Do Germans call their highway system the 'German Autobahn?'

Do Britians call their local drinking establishment a 'British Pub?'

Nobody bothers to indicate the nationality of anything local to them if it shares their nationality, to do otherwise would twist the English language up into such a stilted, over-self-describing mess that the Germans would start claiming that the BRITISH have no sense of humor, and that they're trying to turn English into a weak form of German.

But still, for all the 'violence' inherent in 'American Football' at least nobody gets their, er, 'sensitive bits' stomped on repeatedly by a cleat-wearing opponent who 'was just trying to get to the ball.' (Hint to the stomper: the ball you want is the large black and white thing rolling away, it was never hidden in the other guy's shorts to begin with.)

But we're getting off topic here, so let's just agree to be two friends separated by a common language. You raise a pint to me, I'll raise a pint glass of hard cider to you. (Never could get the taste for any beer, American, British, German, they all taste like crap to me, but that hard cider, I could drink THAT until the barkeep cut me off.)

Ow, that pun actually hurt.

No hot hamster babe for you. (Look it up on YouTube if you need to. Looks like they only ran the 'hamster babes' subseries of the 'Kia Hamsters' series for a year or so. I thought it was a clever variation on the old 'sex sells' theory of car comercials.)

I always thought the hamster theme was kind of weird. Is there something about hamsters that makes people want to buy cars? Generally, when I think of hamsters and cars, it's a Smart car and I figure the hamsters are under the hood.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kia_Soul#Marketing

Like many marketing successes, it started with a simple idea, got unexpected popularity, and was build on.

The initial commercial alluded to economy cars as 'hamster wheels,' with the new Kia Soul as the 'cooler' way to get around town in a small car. Then the commercial unexpectedly went viral on the internet, and they Kia just 'rolled with it.'

It's kind of the way that the Gekko ended up shilling for Geiko, when originally he didn't work for them, and was annoyed at all the people accidentally calling 'gekko' when they meant to call 'Geiko.' Or how the Far Fox hand puppet that the one shaty car dealer used to try and distract people from getting a CarFax report turned into a spokesman for CarFax (and is apparently running a huge organization of 'woodland critters' to gather and collate all the data on the CarFax servers.)

I guess this is just kind of what happens after all the kids who grew up with the Disney version of Robin Hood turn into adults, that 'fuzzy animals are cute' phase in their life doesn't seem to end.

Stoopid overloads kept tripping, plus somebody switched the labels on the up and down buttons so I switched the wires back and put them big overloads in. Then I panicked when the guy started screaming about not being able to get his seat belt off.

I'll go get the drain drum so the blood doesn't mess up the floor.

Hey, speaking of NAPA and other auto parts companies selling parts for the do it yourself mechanics, like a lot of us. Has anyone heard or read of a rumour that I've recently heard of, that auto insurance policies are beginning to include clauses in the policies fine print, that the coverage of your vehicle can be excluded from coverage of claims, when in an accident, if proven that any repairs were made previously on the vehicle with unauthorized aftermarket parts by any unlicensed unauthorized person, and claims can be denied coverage? This, if true, is a scary proposition.

The fine print is what allows the Insurance companies to be able to build those tall buildings in major cities that in effect, make a statement, which, in effect, says FU.

This....

Just, this....

Randall, you just won two internets for this, it's so perfect. Hilarious, cringe-worthy, and plausible all at once.

I tip my hat to you.

Fred thought modifying the lift to raise his wife mini van higher he could park his full size pickup truck in the carport also. Like the adds for the fancy lifts the sport car guys have in there garages.

On second thought it may be about the right time to start thinking about a new set of wheels...

And now, the same people that brought you the popular Bass-O-Matic, is bringing to you Compact-Car-O-Matic.

The damn building inspector insists that the roof needs another support. Well there! There's your stinkin roof support. Will you need a hand getting down from there?

Fred, This is the incorrect procedure, and thus does not meet the Federal Regulation for roof crush test.

Garage Experimenter engages new anti-gravity drive on his Ford Minivan, results were sort of a mixed bag. Wife of inventor could not be reached for comment.

Here's our latest smart windoz operated garage lift. Feel free to test it using your car. Just remember, as all windoz products, there is no expressed or implied warranty for merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, by using it you are accepting our terms, blah, blah, blah. S.M
