China Flexes Military Muscles Near Taiwan

Posted July 19, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

From May into June, China conducted military exercises to project power around Taiwan. These events coincided with the visit of the head of the island's anti-unification party to the U.S. In one event, a civilian roll-on/roll-off ferry was commandeered by the People's Liberation Army to transport trucks and personnel from the Yellow Sea's Bohai Sea to the South China Sea. China also sent naval units and aircraft in "imitated real combat conditions in waters east of the Bashi Channel, south of Taiwan."

If you are wondering what the Chinese are up to in the China sea it is wise to remember that the Chinese play GO. Likewise, If you are wondering what Putin is doing in Europe, consider the Russian play chess.

Kind of explains why we don't seem to be effective at countering either.

Shit, the Russians play not only chess but also with an X-box controller to steer their new tank Armata. Hopefully the American soldiers at their consoles have still a bit more experience.

China has been trying to intimidate Taiwan since the Chinese Revolution. This is nothing new. The only reason they haven't invaded Taiwan is because the USA protects them.

True enough, but they are in a massive moderation program of their Strategic and Tactical armed forces like never before...call in expansionism if you will. And it's happening in a big way with them building islands, with military facilities & equipment in the South China Sea, in areas highly contested by other nations, such as Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines to name a few. These new islands also happen to occur in one of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet. The ChiComs are openly contesting the US Navy's influence in that region as well. For the first time ever, Red China has begun to equip their ICBMs will Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRV), ie, thermonuclear warheads.

And the Russians are doing the very same thing.

I agree. Something is going to happen here pretty soon and we're not going to like it.

I think many are already not liking it. The simple fact is China could literally over run Taiwan anytime they wanted and do it so fast that no one would be able to respond with anything other than a nuclear ICBM.

China has bigger plans though. They have realized they will be the superpower of the 21st century and are now gearing themselves up for that task. Given the speed at which they are able to develop and deploy new technologies I can see them eclipsing our influence in the next twenty years.

The way Emperor Barry has depleted our military to Pre-Pearl Harbor levels, I'd say the the ChiComs are pretty damn close already to eclipsing our Military might on many levels.

And most of their technological advances in weaponry was overwhelmingly helped by their massive military and industrial espionage apparatus + a large army of Military computer Hackers.

Granted a Navy is good at disrupting trade and supporting landing forces. Our sub force is probably a better deterrent (if at all) than our land based missiles. But since China has all the resources it needs and we and our allies depend on their exports far more than the Chinese depend on our imports. Add to this, once they finish their eastern expansion I am not sure what good our navy will be from the middle of the pacific should a land based confrontation break out.

Not even addressing the total economic disaster that would result should China call our loan.

You want to know what is truly scary? Red China has cornered (as in monopoly) the World market on Rare Earth minerals. Everything that uses a computer processor etc. in this country, and that includes our advanced technology weapon systems, relies heavily on them. We rely on China not to disrupt that flow. They are holding our military hostage in a sense and can cut us off at the knees. Scary indeed.

Did anyone watch '60 Minutes' last night, especially regarding the Rare Earth episode?

I don't see what the big fuss is all about. One day China will simply buy America out of their coffee fund.

Agreed, when the SHTF, mainly the worldwide Economy crashes in a big way. It'll be worse than the Great Depression.

Lest we not forget, China owns over $6TRIILION of our Federal-issued Securities. They'll come calling to cash them in once everyone's economies tank. And Emperor Barry will give them American lands and vital resources to pay them off. Ya think? Hell, the Chicoms bought the old US Navy deep water port in Sand Diego years ago. It should never had happen, but that's politics and corporate cronyism for ya. And what do they exactly need with that, eh? Two things: off-loading of Chinese Army equipment for occupation of said lands, and for shipping home those resources.

Re: China Flexes Military Muscles Near Taiwan

Hmmm, interesting situation there.

The PRC(1) (China) wants to invade the RC(2) (Taiwan), but doing so will start a war between China the USA.

The USA (among other nations) wants to 'liberate'(3) North Korea, but doing so will start a war between China and the USA.

A delicate balance there, if either 'little brother' country is attacked, the threat preventing an attack on the other 'little brother' country becomes moot.

Wonder if Kim Jong Ill is claiming that he's 'protecting' Taiwan by maintaining his power in North Korea.

Or does he realize that one misstep with China would remove the protection Taiwan's existence offers HIM(4).

Notes:

  1. The People's Republic of China, the Communist-led party that took control during WWII or the Cold War(5)(6).
  2. The Republic of China, the Imperial Chinese government living/working 'in exile' from Mainland China(6).
  3. Which is a diplomatic way of saying "We're going to invade you for your own good, because your leaders look to be sat-bhit insane to us, and we feel you would do better with a more 'elected by the people' government, as long as that new government is properly grateful to us for their opportunity."(7)
  4. Yeah, like that would happen, Kim Jong Ill DOES look to be sat-bhit insane.
  5. I'm not a history major, and I've got too much work here to keep fact-checking to narrow-down my dates.
  6. It's a screwed up situation, two Chinas, both claiming to be the 'real' China, but I'll leave it to the diplomats to sort out.
  7. It may not be morally right, but sometimes, it seems like certain people need to be slapped across the face and told point-blank, "No, you do NOT get to run this country, you're screwing everything up, and pissing off all your international friends."(8)
  8. I do not miss the irony that the USA recently had a leader who needed just that. More than one leader, if you ask around, but that conversation thread just leads to screaming and punching, and I try to avoid that sort of Drama.
