Japan Schedules Patrol Plane Tropical Tests

Posted August 02, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Japan is sending two development models of its Kawasaki P-1 patrol aircraft to Djibouti for testing under "tropical and desert" conditions. These will be the first overseas operations of the aircraft, which also include an air show appearance in the UK before heading to Djibouti on the Horn of Africa. Two Japanese Kawasaki-Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft currently operate from there on anti-piracy patrols. Plans are for 65 P-1s to replace Japan's fleet of 80 P-3Cs.

Did the Japanese find a way to improve the low speed efficiency the P-3C's have?
