"In the U.S.A, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires a slope of no more than 1:12 for wheelchairs and scooters for business and public use, which works out to 1 foot of ramp for each inch of rise."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheelchair_ramp

The steps at the top are necessary so that the maximum permitted slope is not exceeded.

The robot installed wheelchair ramp suffered from the stair counter's binary bit b2 being stuck low.

(If you spend too much time at a lab bench you will get it)

It says right here in the builder's manual: 'Building a handicapped ramp is a 3 step process.'

It started out as a handicap-able swim pool, but the contractor that was building it was reading the prints up-side-down.

Don't, someone will try!

Then again, someone's likely to try skateboarding it anyway, sign or no sign.

They intend to take further steps to finish the ramp at the top, although I am inclined to think you will need a degree to calculate the angle of the gradient and the builder is likely to slope off rather than wait - which could get you down - but on the up side their is a 1 in 12 chance you will rise to the occasion.

Old joke, Phoenix (and I know old jokes, many of mine are practically antiques; you can't tell them as hard as you use to, they've gotten fragile with age), that one was being bandied about eight years ago.

Is not so much as frail, as much as people are offended by everything now-a-days.

Re: Caption This for 4/29/16

You missed the location of the parenthesis, Phoenix. The 'fragile antiques' comment was referring to the tired, old jokes *I* tell; that's called 'self-depreciation,' aka 'take that, me!'

Eight years (two consecutive Presidential terms) is not long enough for jokes about the president or ex-president to become 'Antiques.'

I was just trying to hang a lampshade on the jokes told when W was leaving being repeated when his immediate successor is leaving.

It just feels 'uncreative' to recycle the same jokes for two consecutive politicians, unless there is a clear parallel between their activities, Like IL Governor George Ryan(R), impeached and imprisoned on corruption charges, and his successor, IL Governor Rod Blagojevich(D), impeached and imprisoned on corruption charges. (Different corruptions, though, Ryan was selling licenses and state contracts under the table; B-Rod (as he liked to be called) was selling state contracts, and trying to sell the Senate seat Obama had vacated when he was elected president.) (Okay, they're not so different after all. This is the state of the State I live in, Does that better clarify my 'dislike(1)' of career politicians?)

Notes:

  1. 'Dislike' is not a strong enough word, 'disdain, disgust,' those are closer, but still not strong enough. I'm afraid the word I need does not exist, and that may be a good thing; if it DID exist, it would be so strong and offensive to all that one utterance of it would be enough to poison the entire atmosphere of the planet, boil away the seas, and shatter plant's crust to rubble.

I see,

Then I misread it "that one was being bandied about eight years ago" You see, from 4 years ago it comically rings true as it does today. 8 years ago BO was just a presidential candidate and does not apply.

Looking at these finished I'm kind of proud. I thought it was kind of weird at first but you know the city and these art projects they do. That and It clearly stated in my contract that 75% of all staircases in the park must include a wheelchair accessible ramp as part of thier final design which is at the discretion of the contracted builder. . The unveiling is tomorrow!

Safety inspector says to builder at final buy-off "Can't you see the flaw?"

Builder replies "But they raised the garden beds after the ramp was finished."

Safety inspector replies "No, that's not the issue, there's supposed to be a safety rail on the edge!!!

... and the Chancellor of the State University of the entire University system commenced:

''It is such a great honor for me to personally dedicate this truly beautiful, multi-million dollar, specially-commissioned, artistic sculpture in front of our Fine Arts Administration Building. It truly must become an icon that will inspire our nation's most talented student artists to apply to such an exemplary institution as is this.''

Just then, his aide interjects, ''but, sir. the dedication site is on the opposite side of the building...'' (and muttered under his breath, ''our tuition and tax dollars hard at work... I am soooooooo inspired...)

Sooooooo, the Chancellor continued.

''It must be intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer that this inspiring sculpture is intended as a parable to remind us that, although the first strides towards any worthy goal in life may well be smooth and easy, and that the final steps may be steep and difficult, finally reaching that plateau is necessary to prepare one's self for that sharp turn that always seems to follow.''

''Thank you all for attending this dedication, and yes, I will personally accept direct cash donations to purchase the, ah, er, (my commemorative plaque ?) Yes, that must be it...''
