Can Holodecks be Far Behind?

Posted August 04, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Technologists have long predicted that we will soon hold virtual meetings to avoid the time and expense that travel requires. After years of false starts, that moment grew much closer in April, when a CEO met 500 of his company's executives in Chicago by "beaming in" from a studio in Paris. Meanwhile, his human resources chief performed the same trick from New York. The result? A totally immersive meeting at which all of the participants could interact as though they physically resided in the same room. Although such holographic magic has happened before, the necessary computing power and bandwidth make it a rare occurrence. In this case, the geographic dispersion of company management made the effort well worth its cost.

I can't imagine having to see the boss in three dimensions. It does seem like overkill. A good video link (better than Skype!) should suffice. JMHO.

While I agree the concept is "neat", I believe it is unnecessary "fluff" in the use of our technological toolbox.

To answer the title question, yes!

Photonic technology also incorporates force-field and transporter technology. When we get those, then we won't be far behind.
