Cows Content with Air Control

Posted September 06, 2007 8:06 AM

Some say contented cows give better milk; others contend that's udder nonsense. Put yourself in the cow's position: Wouldn't the threat of shock from an electrically-controlled milking apparatus make you a little nervous? Here's a dairy operation that believes it is prudent to err on the side of contentment.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pneumatics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pneumatics today.

Stray voltage on american dairy farms are a huge issue. "leakage" no matter how small can really rise havoc on a 1600 animal comfort.

The problem is that it is very hard to track down, because it can come from a multiple of sources

>> Put yourself in the cow's position...

This is anthropomorphism at it's worst. The cow doesn't perceive the world in the same way that humans do and it can't think the way humans do. As pointed out, cows can perceive leakage currents in the ground to a level that a human won't even notice. So putting yourself in the cows hooves isn't going to help!

The farmer will look after the animal, it is in his best interest, (business).

And with animal rights, the way it is. (sometimes treating animals as equals or better, one becomes deaf to what is really being said)

I do like to think humans are at the top of the food chain....atleast most of the time.

Cows are actually very intelligent and inquisitive. Any new item or experience will show as a drop in production. The next cows will also notice that something is wrong and will resist entering the crate.

On a modern dairy farm the production of each cow is monitored and any change will be investigated and the error noticed and corrected.

You are correct about some degree of intelligence -- or at least the ability to select there favorite foods.

We have been throwing eared corn culls to the cows for about three weeks and ran out for a while -- we threw stalks and hay and the cows literally threw the stuff out of the way to search for the corn they expected. Needless to say, they did consume the offered feed after searching for the items they wanted most.

Experience that I had with cows is whether it's that animals are comfortable or if it's the routine. When the routine is broken literally chaos can follow. And the change can be diet, unfamiliar addition, such as personal, animal, equipment. Or something one does not notice at first such as stray voltage.

And how they react. sometime as a herd, while you have a few, without giving the animals too much credit the veterans of the herd, that would roll with change or not.

I saw the more contact you have with a number cattle, or any animal (horses, dogs...) each animal do have different traits (personality???) within the herd.

Growing up on the farm you could almost name them with their traits. Such as: Where am I, I don't think I supposed to be here, Kicker, Runner or This is where I belong.

Like allot of things you get out what you put into them.

Yes they are the true masters of the dairy, what they feel about something goes.

One should learn to say "yes dear".

If they don't like something they simply turn down the outlet valve until it becomes part of their routine.
