Do Remanufactured Valves Meet Spec?

Posted November 24, 2007 5:46 AM by Sharkles

Does that remanufactured valve meet specs? Or has it just been repainted to look good? Articles in Valve and Plant Services magazines raise these questions. Process Safety Consultant Bob Baker, writing in Valve, says that used, salvaged control valves are being marketed as repaired, refurbished or remanufactured valves, but they may not meet their original ASME B16.34 defined pressure-temperature ratings designated by class. A Plant Services article, writing about the decision to scrap or rebuild a valve, says there is a risk that the use of a remanufactured valve may introduce lesser quality and greater future process problems and repair cost.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Valve Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Valve Technology today.

I don't know much about valves but if they have to live up to such high specs, don't they get tested first?

Worked in the valve industry for 12 years. We, of course, built and sold new, although at times, notably catapult valves for aircraft carriers and when naval craft were in for refitment, we did some refurb work. I can say with certainty that when these valves were received they were given full scrutiny as to weather they were rebuildable to begin with. All seals and practically all wearable parts and bushings were replaced with original specification parts and the unit was tested as though it were new. In most case, the only original parts were the body, covers, bonnets, handwheels and the like. In the case of the catapult valves, much of the structural fulcrum pieces were replaced. We even started rebuilding other manufactures valves. We obtained necessary parts from the OEM. It's all in who is doing the rebuild and are they reputable.

Hi all,

Let`s do the question in another form: If you have a valve in any plant and make some major maintenance on it (i.e. replace a broken or bent stem, seat rings, wedge or any other main part) ¿the valve does not comply with the original specification? ¿must we change the complete valve?

I think there should be thousands of valves around the world that have been repaired or refurbished. ¿Someone is telling that all these valves should be declared "inoperable"?

Of course, after repairing any item you have to make the test and measurements necessary to get the adequate assurance that the item will perform as expected.

Regarding "buying" refurbished items (valve or any other else) is another question which involves some different aspects (level of confidence in supplier among others)

I think it is not the ususal way in the industry to buy this type of items. I believe this is more frequent in common life (Second hand cars or TV sets)

Remanufactured valves meet a greater spec than original 99.9% of time, I have seen major control valve manufactures get within a certain tolerance and have the attitude"that's close enough". They can be way out on the end of the scale instead of meeting the closest characteristics needed. Every re-man I use is checked for OEM specs before and after being repaired and I'll take a good re-man every time. As far as warranty - they have the exact same guarantee and warranty as a new one or else find a shop that will carry liability insurance to cover. Sometimes "consultants" will say what their paid to say.....

Regarding refurbishment of control valves-I am currently Manager of a Control valves repair,re-manufacturing business in South Africa. Our main purpose are to refurbish used control valves and thus extending the life of the control valve and it's lifespan. As been said their are those in the industry which are of questionable strategies, like just spraying the valve ,and then their are the people like us who built our business on the integrity of the service we rendered to our clients; who are some off the biggest companies in South Africa. Our company rely on the quality of our workmanship, after repairs have been done to the valve. We do quality control through out the process of refurbishment so that the valve meet or are of the same standard and specifications that it has been manufactured to.We have incorporated a quality control plan in our daily process to make certain that the ASME or ANSI specifications are meet.Pressure testing and leakage rate testing are being done and being witnessed by our clients to make sure they meet the standards of manufacturing. After re-manufacturing we gave a warranty on our workmanship for a period of time.We service control valves that are some 50 years old and are still in process. Some off the companies have extended the service intervals of their valves because of the service we rendered to them.It is currently very cost effective to refurbish because we can give them a valve back that are as good as new at less than half the price of a new valve.

I agree with you. All industrial plants around the world have refurbished valves. Valve maintenance is a major budget consuming matter on many plants. So I told that all those valves meets the original specifications. Another question is to buy directly refurbished ones (At least I don´t know there is a big market for it).

I have been working in oil industries & business for 20 years as material engineer/corrosion engineer

We do refurbish high $ value valves especially large sizes If and only of refurbishment is feasible, safe and if alternatives are not available.

We refurbish valves against well written and approved procedures, where valves subjected to all necessary tests and examinations.

valves will be subjected to close visual , dimensional , NDE , air and hydro test as if they where new , so we apply for example API 598 hydro/air.

We never by "second hand" valves ;neither do we keep refurbished valves for long period of time… only few months till we find alternatives/solutions.

The best about the company I work for , we send scrapped valves to steel mills after ( shredding ) them to prevent refurbishment and reselling to us by others.

Lastly

We do have one RV which is in very good condition from 1943 (65) years –older than my father….

When I refer to its history, all papers turned into yellow , some are unreadable , and I will tell my unborn son to take good eye on that valve.

RE-MANUFACTURED VALVES WILL NEVER EVER MEET SPEC>
