This summer may see first ice-free North Pole

Posted June 30, 2008 8:58 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

There's a 50-50 chance that the North Pole will be ice-free this summer, which would be a first in recorded history, a leading ice scientist says.Preliminary February and March data from a NASA satellite shows that the circle of ice surrounding the North Pole is "considerably thinner" than scientists have seen during the five years the satellite has been taking pictures, NASA ice scientist Jay Zwally said Friday. He thinks there is slightly less than a 50-50 chance the North Pole will be ice-free.

This is one prediction that I want to see what happens at the end of August/September.

My gut says that it is bunk and this prediction will be very measurable! If there is a 50% chance of no ice, then there is a very high chance there will be very little ice.

However, if the ice pack remains the same or has very little change in mass, then we can throw this prediction and the "science" behind it, out the door.

Anyone taking bets?

Oh, since when did the North Pole have a land mass as depicted in the picture?

This is a picture taken in 2007 that shows a glacier seen from the Ice Fjord on the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard.

Being a watcher of Canadian Ice for years, I have to say that the melt this year is far behind previous years, check out the environment Canada web site; http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/data/analysis/350_100.gif

Sea ice is far behind in melt from even last year at this time.

I am quite surprised by the lack of melt off Alaska, considering the amount of volcanic ash falling on the ice from the western edge of the ring of fire, the ice should be melting faster than it is.

Just more hype based on very little actual data.

It a bit like getting older the hair from the head goes somewhere else..while the artic ice cap is thinning, the antartic sea ice has been expanding.

I'll bet and say there is a 50-50 chance the ice won't melt.

<"....There's a 50-50 chance that the North Pole will be ice-free this summer, which would be a first in recorded history....">

That's rubbish, both the so-called statistics, and the "recorded history" part.

Who writes these so-called informing articles, and why does no proper proofreading be done on most of the, before publication.

My present information is that Santa Claus has already moved to Antarctica.

Kind Regards....

Who writes these so-called informing articles,

writes them,.....or sponsors them.

"My present information is that Santa Claus has already moved to Antarctica."

That's good thinking on S.C.'s part. He will be right there when the magnetic poles switch!

Sponsors them is closer to the correct approach.

Dr. Suzuki who has been jumping up and down for years about global warming in a genetics expert, why on earth does he figure he knows anything about climatic changes?

he is however making a killing doing television advertising for home retrofitting for better heating and cooling.

Well the proof is in the pudden as they say, oops ice cap did not melt, more 'yahoo' science...

I looked bacl on some of the ice maps I had from previous years and the melt was a lot less this year than previously, better luck next time.
