Why Your New Year’s Resolution is Bound to Fail

As the New Year fast approaches, you may be one of millions who resolve to get in shape or lose weight this year. But chances are by February 1st, you will have given up, thrown in the towel, or forgotten what you had set out to accomplish in the first place. With only 4 weeks in and 48 to go, most people throw aside one of their main goals (if not their only goal) for the year! Certainly, a lack of discipline is one of the leading factors in derailing that ultimate goal of get fit and losing weight. And the list goes on and on, one excuse right after the other.

It probably comes as no surprise that, each year, 2 of the top 3 New Year's resolutions revolve around getting fit or dieting to lose weight. The problem with the word "diet" is that it comes across to many as a temporary fix. Once people lose their target weight (if they can make it that far), they think they can go back to the same ole same. Nothing could be further from the truth. Achieving your goals and sustaining them over time requires a change in lifestyle, a commitment to making better food choices, and being disciplined. If you are out of shape and overweight, do you really think that once you drop 10 or 20 lbs you can ever return to your previous habits and maintain your new-found glory? Of course not!

We go through life with one body. No trade-ins, no guarantees, and no warranties. It's on our shoulders to take care of the body that we have. So why not treat your body like a temple? Achieve an optimal level of health and fitness. You will live longer and be happier. You will experience fewer illnesses, ailments and trips to the doctor's office. Your spouse and/or children will be thankful and grateful to have you healthy, and it's more likely you'll be around longer than if you are to toss aside your resolution of getting fit or dieting this coming year for a trip to the local burger palace.

For anyone who is serious about losing weight or getting fit, there is no reason to wait until the first of any year to get started. Resolutions should be made throughout the year when the need arises. In fact, someone making this commitment on June 1st is probably much more likely to succeed than someone making the same commitment on January 1st.

But don't get discouraged. Challenge yourself and demand nothing short of success. There is much more to life than junk food and you can lose weight without starving yourself or eating tofu. In coming entries, I will tell you how you can eat more and lose weight. Yes, you heard me right!

I definitely agree with you that people who resolve to lose weight and diet are probably going to fail. The resolutioners will clog the gym in January and end up gone by February. It is very unrealistic to set a hefty goal that you are supposed to work toward for months. A generic goal will get you nowhere because you will never know when you have accomplished it. Being vague and thinking that after a month of workout you are going to look like an A-list celebrity is unrealistic. Stop fooling yourself. Make goals that you can accomplish within weeks of each other seems like the best idea to me. It keeps me motivated to accomplish the small goals, even if the big goal is months away.

Yes. Like they say "Rome was not built in a day". Setting smaller realistic goals to achieve the end goal is perhaps the single best way to keep on track in reaching your ultimate goal. Alot of baby steps are still steps in the right direction.

You do not resolve to do what you do well now. You resolve to do what you have failed to to do all your life.

Galley slaves in old Rome did well in something they hated, it is all in the incentive...

"and nor was it destroyed in a day."

Usually getting out of shape and becoming unhealthy took many years of practice. We (or at least *I*) tend to forget that as well, and look for the instant gratification. But like was said above... small steps towards a large goal - the same way we (inadvertently) got to where we are now.

To many a new years resolution is no more than a cultural euphemism and or a cultural mechanism by which to engage in social gaiety.

I never fail in my resolution....

I resolve not to resolve anything.

Regarding weight, I am not overweight , so no need to worry.

Thank you for that compliment!

The funny thing is that someone like you inspires me in return to continue writing about such topics that can motivate, inspire and help others.

There are more weekly installments to come so keep an eye out for them.

Thanks once again.
