Whatever Happened To...: Acid Rain?

Posted March 13, 2009 10:35 AM

From Discover Magazine | RSS:

At the end of the last century, a great environmental crisis came from above in the form of acid rain. As the precipitation "killed" lakes and streams, alarming studies reported massive die-offs of trees and fish. A 1984 Congressional report estimated that acid rain caused the premature death of about 50,000 people in the United States and Canada. But in the last decade, acid rain has all but fallen off the radar. So is the threat really over, or just in hiding?

What happened was regulation that limited the amount of pollution that could be released into the environment.

No pollution = no problem. This is why our rivers don't catch fire anymore - environmental regulation. This is another example where environmental regulation has worked to make the world a better place.

Acid rain is not gone, it's just not nearly the problem that it once was. It still occurs - in my own backyard. I live two miles from the chemical mega-complex near the Houston Port Authority. Whenever we go several weeks without a rain, and then get a good one, the acid level of the water in my swimming pool goes off the scale of my measuring kit - way to the acid side.
