Would Desperation Drive You To This?

Posted March 17, 2009 11:12 AM by CarDomain

With the current economic climate and unpredictable gas prices, fuel efficiency is on everyone's mind. Although big SUVs and gas-burning muscle cars are still plentiful on our roads, smaller cars are becoming more common every day.

I found this Tango from the Commuter Cars Corporation in the Home Depot parking lot yesterday and couldn't help but think about how the way some of us view transportation is changing.

This narrow electric road pod won't haul much home from the hardware store but it does 0-60 in 4 seconds and you can park four of them in an average parking spot. It also runs a 12-second quarter mile and comes standard with a steel roll cage–and this one was a even little tricked out with a Momo wheel and one-behind-the-other Sparco seats.

About as stable as an SUV (the battery bank is located low, keeping the vehicles centre of gravity low).

Are they BSing me? Go to the web site. They want me to put up a 10K deposit, and the total cost is over 100 large. Kiss this company goodbye real fast.

"With the current economic climate and unpredictable gas prices, fuel efficiency is on everyone's mind. Although big SUVs and gas-burning muscle cars are still plentiful on our roads, smaller cars are becoming more common every day."

Sorry, the facts of that statement simply are not supported.

Gas prices are low and will remain low until Israel strikes Iran, which I give about a 60 to 70% chance that will happen before the end of this year. Then there will be a huge gas spike. Read my comment #2 on this thread for an analysis if you are interested.

Hybrid sales have totally tanked according to this article in the LA Times. Only 15,144 hybrids sold last month in the US! That was out of a total US sales of 688,909 cars and trucks last month.

The current economic crises have collapsed all car sales, but the fact of the matter is that the buying public, by in large, just don't want econo-boxes and hybrids.

I realize that some of us would like to think that the tide is turning or something, but wishing for something is simply not going to make it true.

In spite of what our US government (and many special interest groups) wants us to drive, Americans stubbornly stick to buying what they want to buy.

You stated, "and couldn't help but think about how the way some of us view transportation is changing." The key word here is "some of us." If the ratio of sales figures is representative of how "some of us" are thinking, then those numbers unequivically show that the number of "us" is shrinking.

And just one impact from a Hummer and it'll go ricocheting off the guardrails at at least 2x the impact velocity. At twice the cost? No thx. It might be fine for getting groceries and life insurance around town (if you're willing to ignore the astronomical insurance rate for such an expensive and fragile car) but these have no place on thruways where speed differences between lanes are routinely 25 mph and maneuverability is often the only thing that keeps you from getting into an accident, visibility notwithstanding. I wouldn't be caught alive in one of these things on a road with a speed limit over 30 mph, much less dead. (And, no, I don't like Hummers either.)

If you go to the website you'll see 3 different models.

T600 = $108,000 ouch

T200=$39,900 Still Pricey

T100=$18,700 Little high priced for a tiny car. I would consider the T100 I've considered the Smart car and they cost just as much.

If these cars are so expensive then better wait for another 6/8 months for "Nano" offered by Tata Motors Ltd. India, @ U.S $2000/-. But it is petrol driven 4 door Mini Car. Export version is also being offered.

With 4" of ground clearance. this car wouldn't last 1 trip in my city. The potholes here would eat this car up.

Wouldn't last 10 seconds on Texas hiways with the 350s with brush guards and the 18-wheelers. And, I'm six-foot four; looks like I'd have to take out the front seat to fit in it. So, the answer to the question for me is... NO!

Any crash ratings? Do they have a rating lower than 1? Should get half price at the car wash. Hell take it in the shower with you. Oh well, plus side is that it will probably fit in a standard sized hole in the ground saving the casket expense.

According to the web site. It has a Crash cage built designed by a NASCAR Engineer. Plus 4 point harness for a seat belt. And a full compliment of air bags. So I would say it would hold up pretty well in a crash. Even with a big F3500 or Hummer running it over.

Seems safer than the Smart car. And I see them all over town these days.

It also states that the rear seat can be pulled out for more leg room for us long legged drivers. I'm 6'5" but only weigh 160 lbs So if I have leg room I'm pretty comfortable in any seat.

One's mind just has to image:

a. not wearing a seat belt

b. having the door slightly ajar

c. striking a curb head on

The rest is left to the reader as an exercise for their imagination.

When this car was first built, I doubt they offered seat belts. And the door latch was pre-Nader pin design. I think the car was called Isetta.

think about how the way some of us view transportation...

Judging by most of the responses, it is quite clear that people [Americans?] are reluctant to rethink their driving needs or, in fact, their overall energy consumption--especially in light of a vastly changed world from the 1950's

Sure, this thing is worse than useless to haul the neighborhood kids to soccer practice or plywood sheets from home depot--but it is perfect for tight urban spaces--imagine this: You park your "normal" vehicle at the Park-n-Ride and take the light rail into the city; there you swipe your card and take one of these things for the day to get to the office, go for lunch, run local errands, etc.--on returning you park it where you basically got it, get on the train for the return trip, and drive your SUV home--saves wear and tear, gasoline and pollution--$100,000 price tag would undoubtedly come down with mass acceptance, and for the purpose outlined above the less expensive, less powerful version would be fine.

Having a vehicle that covers all possibilities is old-age thinking, just look around the next time you're stuck in rush-hour traffic--I'll bet bananas to doughnuts that all the cars around you, for as far as you can see, have only the driver in them--so you should be stuck in a giant Hummer that the rest of us can't see around, and that the rest of us have to breath your stinky exhaust, just because once or even twice a month you need to haul a tribe of people somewhere or maybe grab some lumber to work on the treehouse you promised your kids three year ago?

Yes, a motorcycle would be better, an electric motorcycle better still, if you're just hauling yourself--at least the Tango will carry two people and their briefcases, without concerns for weather. Is it a replacement for the Family Truckster? Not if you really NEED the Family Truckster, but again look around--how often are the vehicles you see on the road used to anything near their capacity?

I don't know about desperation, but I'd like to think there will be a liveable planet around in another hundred years--trouble is there won't be if we don't start making drastic changes now...

Great for the inner urban transportation needs you described. It would probably cut WAY back on Taxi requirements; which would cut polution also.

I also REALLY like your "Location" description.
