A "Paper or Plastic" Game Changer?

Posted July 09, 2009 7:49 AM

The American Chemistry Council has announced a new initiative to "dramatically" increase plastic bag recycling. The program calls on plastic bag manufacturers to boost recycled content to 40% by 2015. Will this move finally settle the paper or plastic debate?

PLASTIC RECYCLING

Plastics ,other than the biodegradable menace have got lot of advantages, viz- Recyclabllity, convertibility, decomposability, renewability and had been instrumental in delivering low cost durable non metallic material substitutions, and vast range of potential utilities, chemical compatibility, stability against corrosion, weightlessness, transportability and many more.

The best part of ensuring recyclable is the storage and handing over to the net work for recycling. When people get money for scrapes, they tend to preserve it for exchange of value. Again on the garbage disposal and handling control part,Singapore's model can be universally adapted and even in education prominent inputs can be made. Particularly under developed countries got to come a long way as regard to waste disposal, conversions and storage. It could be a potential new area of technology and poses scope for enterprise.

Adelaide in South Australia has completely banned the use of lightweight plastic bags. We are now forced to use (and reuse) heavyweight bags. We have never used paper bags.

Why should there be a debate at all? Just get good quality bags and continually reuse them. Environmental problem solved...
