Shakespeare(theEngineer) Resurrected

Posted July 15, 2009 6:00 AM by ShakespeareTheEngineer

Fear not, the immortal bard has not returned from his grave to the mass horror of many a science and mathematics wizard. I just wanted to take the opportunity to reintroduce myself, known here as ShakespeareTheEngineer, to the hallowed halls of CR4 and let those of you who were routine readers of The Whiteboard Jungle last year know that it is back up and running.

For those of you who are new to CR4 in the past eight months, The Whiteboard Jungle is a blog that focuses on technology in the classroom. It deals with gadgets, techniques, philosophies of application, and the discussion of applicable ethical dilemmas that arise from its usage or requiring its usage.

From a personal standpoint, my real name is Pete Mody. I have been a teacher for about ten years working in Upstate New York. The finer details of my professional experience can be located on my profile, so if you are that interested, give it a look.

While I am the main contributor to The Whiteboard Jungle, I am also pleased to welcome back Jaxy (from Jaxy of All Trades) who has offered to write the occasional piece and also to welcome TechoutReach, a colleague of mine who is entering the CR4 blogosphere for the first time, and who will be spending a lot of his time blogging for "On This Day" In Engineering History.

Looking ahead, there are many paths that we plan to traverse this summer, from in-lab computer monitoring software, to websites that allow students and parents to grade teachers, to how differences in learning styles may affect the effectiveness of technology usage. That is just the beginning. Ethical debates about teachers with Facebook accounts and other social networking pitfalls will surely stimulate discussion, as well.

I am excited to be back in the fold of the CR4 family and am looking forward to the spirited discussions that I was used to having with regular readers last summer and meeting new readers in the coming months ahead. With the amount of us with strong opinions and a willingness to share them, I hope we do not disappoint.

Kia Kaha,

ShakespeareTheEngineer (a.k.a. StE)

This is exciting to see it resurrected. Also, this reminds me to post a couple of links that I've come across recently. As an educator with only terrible blackboards on the walls, here are two links worth checking out if you want to update your classroom on a shoe-string budget.

A tech blogger by the name of Chris Metcalf has posted step-by-step instructions for a DIY whiteboard using tile board and plywood.

If you already use whiteboards, here's an experiment of sorts in which more cleaners than you can think of were used to clean some heavily marked whiteboards.

By the way, nice image!

"why the sepulchre,
Wherein we saw thee quietly inurn'd,
Hath oped his ponderous and marble jaws,
To cast thee up again. What may this mean,
That thou, dead corse, again in complete steel
Revisit'st thus the glimpses of the moon,
Making night hideous; and we fools of nature
So horridly to shake our disposition
With thoughts beyond the reaches of our souls?"

(Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 4)

The image, not of me in my younger years, it's of the Norse god Modi (as close to my name as I could get). He was the God of Battle Rage and led a group of warriors called the Berserks who, if they couldn't find enemies fast enough, would slash trees and bite rocks.

It sounded enough like playing rugby and the name was close enough.

Some good links already shared, TechoutReach. I am looking forward to your blogs "In the Jungle" this summer!

Just a side note to your white board cleaning techniques. We had a whiteboard here that we could not get the marker off of. Strangely enough and artist working here came in while we were trying to figure it out, because he wanted to use the Production Managers hand lotion.

He made the comment about our comment, that we had tried everything, jokingly saying, "Have your tried hand lotion". We laughed while he lotioned up his hands and wiped them across the board. Well long story short (I know to late) he ended with hands full of ink and we now have a new white board cleaner. Pretty much all of the have worked but we use Jergens.

The strangest thing can happen when you think outta the box.

That is insane. How many advancements have been made by accident or as a joke? Countless.

Great story. Thanks for the post.

What light in yonder window breaks....Tis an Idea....and a bloody good one I'd say.

Yes it is amazing what can come from accidents and jokes but ideas are ideas none the less, and we would not have most of our modern conveniences if it were not for off the wall ideas that actually work. These things happen often in industry and I have come up with a few of my own in the years I have been working as a Maintenance Mechanic and Manager.

You hear a lot of people complain about laziness being rampant because we have become a society dependant on our gadgets and gizmos. I agree and disagree with the complainers as I am a lazy man. I say lazy because I wish to put out the least amount of effort to get the most out of what ever I am doing. I do this not because I want to be lazy but because I want to enjoy what I do without becoming tired or inefficient.

Thus the reason for my tag line.

I was going to say that isn't "the least amount of effort to get the most out of what ever I am doing" a good definition of high productivity or high efficiency?

Seems that is exactly where you were going.

I am working on the remix with Beyonce next week. It should be featured soon in Dance Dance Revolution 6. Check for it at your local Dave and Busters.

No. That is how it was spelled. To be honest, though, I have seen its spelled both ways. The source that I used to get it for this site had it spelled as is, but I have seen it spelled the other, more common way, as well.

Now I am going to hunt down my copy of The Riverside Shakespeare while I am at school today and look for sure.

In short, it is quoted as it should be, for now, exactly as I found it.

Oh, and I went to Wikipedia to get it ("you unwieldy behemoth") as a tribute to Side Show Bob from The Simpson's episode from where he says that same line as the computer he is on explodes, foiling his plans.

I just looked it up to make sure, and in short, I am right.

If you have an issue with the spelling I suggest you take it up with the immortal bard the next time you frequent Stratford-upon-Avon.

Hopefully, you have learned your lesson.

As Sharkles said to me earlier...you know you are officially back in the fold of CR4 when Del the Cat has begun to leave comments on your blog again.

I hope you and Mrs. Cat had a prosperous past eight months!
