Can You Describe What This Is/Was Accurately?

07/29/2015 5:23 AM

This was part of a recent problem I had. Can you guess what that was?

I will relate the fully story once someone has guessed/known and posted correctly.

I know what happened, so I don't feel that it is really too difficult, but that is maybe because I know what it is....

Enjoy!!

That is one ugly urinal valve, Andy! psss on it, just tell us.

Seriously, I think it might be some sort of torque coupling device that was terribly underated, or over-driven, then seized up when the bearings upstream went south for the winter.

Seeing that this is sitting on top of a bed, could this be part of the bed frame? Possibly the base of one of the legs.

Looks like it was the top of something. Perhaps a wooden 'cork' to some kind of container?

Or maybe an old tap handle for dispensing beer?

It looks like two nuts welded together on a bolt maybe to facilitate removal of the bolt?

Maybe a shock absorber mount?

I don't know what that is, but I bet I can guess your second problem. After you picked that up off that white table cloth(?) or doily (?) or whatever, I bet you had a nasty black spot to remove.

It is a thread die welded to two nuts to chase the threads on a plug.

One of those security wheelnuts that you couldn't get off.

So you welded a regular nut to it so that you could get a wrench on it?

Re: Can You Describe What This Is/Was Accurately?

Perfect answer, well done!!

That was it.....

The nuts were damaged the year before last by the tyre company that I previously used, I forgot they were in the car, I had meant to throw them away.

My son-in-law found them and used them again!!! They were only damaged in the "undo" direction, not the doing up direction!!

I managed to get 3 off, but the last one was really difficult, I had two gos with two M20 nuts, did not work/weld properly.

Then I had a friend cut the thread out of both nuts to give more welding room. It went a tiny bit off straight, but still allowed the nut to be removed.....

Big sighs of relief all round!!

Thanks to everyone who commented, especially to "Del the first!"

And thanks for all the funny posts as well....Really great Guys.

Seriously?

It looks like a coupling or bearing race extractor for a frozen spline coupling or bearing race, where the nut is welded to the frozen part and used as part of gear puller,or pusher.Thread rod into nut,and extract part.

Just to give you a slightly better idea of what it was, check here:-

This is the original box.

This is one of the "least" damaged ones that I managed to get off without using the welder!!

Here is another photo of the problem nut (not me!!):-

The white piece of "lace" is actually a piece of paper kitchen roll, that I use for anything thats dirty and/or needs cleaning!!!

Be careful now and do not speed on the autobahn!!! your wheel bearings have received electric currents that will have damaged them!!

Or perhaps not.....

Re: Can You Describe What This Is/Was Accurately?

The ground was placed ONLY on the two nuts for that reason...the bearings therefore had no current through them.

I believe they are fine.

I used two nuts also because of the depth of the recess, so that I could get a spanner/wrench on the last half of the second nut....

It worked out fine....

Thanks for your comments, that will alert others here from making such an error....e.g. never let the welding current pass through sensitive bits!!
