What Does It Mean?

09/12/2016 3:25 PM

I came across this hand signal recently, and I was amused. Does everyone know what it means?

In what context was it being used, and is the bottom finger rotating in only one direction?

Also, <ahem> which finger is used (its hard to see from the photo).

Unless the crane operator is at the same level, he would see the sign

About 4 years ago, I had to install a cyclone I designed over 2 buildings where I work, I would have used hand signals to the crane operator, but the building was in the way, so had to use radio. I'm in the brown carhatt jacket by the hook.

In December, 8 degrees out winds were calm when we made the lift, but as we were setting it, winds pick up 5-10 mph. But it was already manageable.

I remember after the welder made a weld, I put my gloved hands over the welds to warm up.

last February, I replace a stack and oxidizer, had a clear line of sight and worked great.

hand signals does work great as long as you have line of sight. Do know if the office took any pictures, I'll check.

You've got it in one. Another too easy question.

Looking further through that code what struck me was the stop sign:

*

*

*

which differs from all the other stop signs I have encountered:

Police traffic

*

*

*

Gliding field winch launch

Gliding field aerotow

Aircraft marshalling signal

I do hope the crane driver does not get confused on the way home.

there were discrepancies for me... or habit..... I had a fist in the air for stop. fortunately, the crane operator understood.

Fortunately, in a power plant setting, we usually thin out the enemy first thing in the morning at the safety meeting and tail gate briefing.

I thought the mechanics did that by sending the engineers out for coffee and donuts so they could get some work done?

What I have observed for move slowly is the thumb and index finger rubbing together; don't remember what they used to indicate up or down.

I also saw, and have used, a flat hand palm down moving back and forth in front of the throat to mean shut it off.

Here in Texas, the thumb and index finger rubbing together just means, "I picked a booger, and next I am going to fling it at you, if you swing that boom at me just one more time."

Really, I have never, ever noticed that hand signal being used here, but maybe once when it was combined with another one meaning move just a smidgen. A smidgen is always the larger of the smallest two divisions on the available tape measure, and always larger than the amount required to arrive at an aligned position.

Hard to tell on extend boob boom and retract boom. I certainly want to print out that signal card, it is much more interesting and educational.

Actually still used today, for most bicyclists, unfortunately Drivers education isn't what it used to be. For both drivers and some bicyclists.

Those only work for those who drive on the left side of the road, and sit on the right side of the vehicle, but thanks for that.

Here in Texas, the gestures are slightly different.

In California, ostensibly to be more efficient, we are able to communicate with only 1/5th of the available digits on our hand.

Interesting for a right-hand drive vehicle, which I have a couple of. Unfortunately modern motorists don't know what they mean even if they can see them from a left-drive vehicle.

For economy's sake, I do most of those gestures with just 2 fingers, minimized further to one finger when driving in the 'colonies'!

Nice list; the local fire depts don't use these anymore, except a couple of them once in a while. I don't listen to police transmissions, so can't say what they use.
