An Engineering Prospective on Folding a Quesadilla

09/27/2016 3:06 PM

I had a quesadilla for lunch today and for a long time I have always been unhappy with they way they are constructed. I guess this is the engineer in me but I will utilize a simple graphic to demonstrate what I mean.

This simple graphic represents the standard way they seem to be made. The red lines represent cuts and the yellow is the filling. You end up with four pieces but the two that have the red arrows pointing to them fall apart since they have no fold. I personally like to put salsa and sour cream inside which makes matters even worse. The two pieces on the edges are much easier to eat and you can even use the fold to scoop stuff into them.

This next graphic represents an alternative way (my possibly but doubtfully original way) to fold them.

Here again the red is a cut and the yellow is the filling. This does add an extra step as you are making two smaller quesadillas but in the end each piece has a fold. I don't think the extra effort is significant but I think the enjoyment would be.

I think that this maybe the future. I predict this will sweep the hospitality industry when the bean counters (how appropriate) realize that more thin snacks can be made with less filling.

I would argue that the extra fold allows you to put more filling in if you wanted to.

Why would they want to?

I would use two cuts to produce four 90º sectors, and then fold each in half along the 45º radius.

I thought about that but then you are making 4 small quesadillas which seems even more complicated production wise. It would yield the same result however.

There is a ready replacement the Mexicans have had for about 300 years now. I think it is called a taco.

In Lubbock, TX the taco has been perfected to an even higher order of culinary excellence at Torchie Tacos. You can get just about any filling dreamt of. I even had one that was German sausage, with pico de gallo, onions, cheeses, etc. They even give you a choice of corn or flour tortilla, and by golly, they give you extra corn ones to keep things together.

The tortilla has evolved to become identified flying objects at most Texas Tech Red Raider home football games. The team has even been penalized for one of these wheat flour whiteys striking a referee. So go out this Thursday night for the Tech game against Kansas Univ. and root for your favorite, and have a Torchie Taco, and a cold one.

By the way, who ever said Mexican food was not supposed to be fast and messy? It's a tradition.

The Taco is totally American, or at least America brought it to the world, thanks to Mr. Bell.

Now I'm hungry

Next we can discuss how to fold a fajita properly, and the merits of harina versus maiz.

Based on your top, open view, I'm going to take a wild guess that you have never seen one made.

As far as I know, the cook throws the cheese on the whole thing.

Just order it open faced, have it delivered on a platter and fold/cut it yourself.

Disfrutar de su quesadilla.

I usually get rice and refried beans with mine, so I'm using a fork anyway.

Use a fork!

Never use a fork on a taco, or a quesadilla. Forks are only allowed on carne guisada, or enchiladas. It is finger food for those who cannot afford forks.
