A Medical First

10/13/2016 9:48 PM

This is pretty cool...what next?

In a medical first, brain implant allows paralyzed man to feel again

For the first time, scientists have helped a paralyzed man experience the sense of touch in his mind-controlled robotic arm.

For the cutting-edge experiment, a collaboration between the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, electrodes smaller than a grain of sand were implanted in the sensory cortex of the man's brain. The electrodes received signals from a robot arm. When a researcher pressed the fingers of the prosthesis, the man felt the pressure in the fingers of his paralyzed right hand, effectively bypassing his damaged spinal cord."...

When the first brain transplant happens, will it be called a body transplant instead?

When I first heard about the planned first head transplant, I got a chill. It seems so, so, so... creepy is the only word that comes to mind. I don't know why this would be. A brain transplant seems mild by comparison and they aren't all that different on a complexity level.

Some people could surely benefit from such an operation; it's just a matter of what you call it.

Lobotomy comes to mind.

I'd rather have a full bottle in front o' me than a full frontal lobotomy.

The claimed human head transplant is a hoax....If we could heal severed spinal cords we wouldn't need so many wheelchairs....experiments on rats has shown this is not possible to do successfully, as in yes you can sew on another head, but the body is still paralyzed and the foreign head is rejected by the body, resulting in death....anybody who thinks this is possible doesn't know anyone who's had their spinal cord damaged...any success in repairing a spinal cord would make headlines around the world, and dominate network news for weeks, you would definitely know about it.....

Should we recommend our politicians try those "brain transplants" first, just to SEE if they really work?

. . . but I'd be more interested if it would help them THINK again. They already do too much feeling.

One cannot transplant what is not present to begin with. However, removing straw from one vessel, and inserting it into the other vessel will not guarantee even one new thought.
