Who Made The First Geodesic Dome?

06/19/2017 10:39 PM

In discussing Structural Engineering, Buckminster Fuller once said, in essence, that (primitives) could not have invented the geodesic dome, becausue they didn't have the ''math'' for it...

And yet, Native Americans built (mobile homes) out of poles and animal hides; migrating Mongolian herdsmen transported their housing (yerts) on wagons from grassland to grassland; Eskimos built semi-hemisperical igloos; various peoples built similar semi-hemispherical (bamboo) huts, etc., all without a single equation...

Can anybody say who earlier (approximated a semblance) of a geodesic dome before B. F. ?

Re: Who Made The First Geodesic Dome?

It depends on whether or not the (intent) of the (structure) is to prevent (air, or other) gas from escaping to the atmosphere...

A relatively rigid trangular lattice structure is (intended) continue to keep (standing up) under conditions of moderately variable internal-external-pressure-differences (without trying to drift away...), while largely allowing internal and external gases to naturally intermix...

I'm quite surprised that CaptMoosie hasn't chimed-in on any of this, given his actual structural engineering work background. Any one hear from him?...

Ignoring standard external forces, like wind, snow, water, seismic, etc., the acting internal forces on the joints of geodesic domes are the basic forces of tension, compression, flexion, and torsion...

What, no shear?

You do understand the reduction in types of predominant forces to which the connections are subject when using members to form triangles (as opposed to squares of hexagons), right?

If it helps, just consider that a dome constructed of members to make triangles could remain rigid even if the connecting joints were not fully tight. The joints do not need to resist changes in the angle various members make.

As I recall, the original Astrodome, in Houston, Texas, used the triangular section plan to make the dome, and it remains a solid structure now.

Like the Tardis, it is bigger on the inside.

Shear and bearing forces are consequences of the basic four forces, not independenent of them...

I don't share your opinion about the superiority of your system of classifying various loads/forces on structures.

If you have a proof relying on more than dogma that can demonstrate tortion is a more fundamental force/load than is shear, I'm interested to see it.

What was the old saying? Total warfare by General Sherman in Georgia? Scorched earth policy means no food left over for anyone or groups following on behind.

Nuke 'em and leave 'em brings a whole new perspective to the war between the sexes.

At that time, there were certain places in the South, that the only remaining food source was collared greens, which were regarded as little more than weeds...

...but without them, even more people would have starved...

I dunno, but I suspect they did have a green card.

Booked collard greens just don't have the same taste, with or without the fatback.

American or British? If we are talking American football, maybe, British for sure would be stable.

Life imitating art, imitating mathematics, or vice versa. Surely you two jousters can accept the idea of an approximation, within limits.

However, if you look at a soccer ball, there is nothing flat at all about the facet faces, they clearly have pronounced curvature.

The universe does not have time for ball and stick models. She is what she is.

There is supposed to be a planetarium dome from the 1920s made in Germany which exactly follows geodesic principles. I read this and have no source from which to verify it.

Good reference to (four-sided) geodesic (aeroplane) structures in the 1930's...

The earlier dirigibles were similarly (wired), as in the case of Britains first large such airship, known a His ''Magesty's Airship R100'' in the same time frame, and going back to the Zeppelin dirigibles of WWI...

But, a Professor Johann Schutte (and some of his students...) partnered with Industrialist, Dr. Karl Lanz, to form a company, in 1908, to compete against the Zeppelin Company for upcomming government contracts...

In 1911, they produced the ''Schutte-Lanz S.L. 1'' as the first known application of geodesic theory (to an airship), by using a diamond lattice airframe...

(Zeppelin) then incorporated several SL-1 innovations to produce the early Zeppelins...

But, the point is that the concept of (geodesic-ness) was known and used before 1912, and therefore was probably applied to ground-bound structures long before it was applied to air frames. The question thus becomes ''By who(m)?''...

In any case, GA from me for providing an interesting reference...

Fuller often borrowed from his students, Kenneth Snelson for example was building crazy sculptures with cables and poles that didn't touch, Fuller renamed them Tensegrety according to some stories, and presto Fuller gets the credit...

At least some of them, for sure. No argument there, especially with the way he did Tesla.

It is always an issue when the protege' is more adept, creative than the mentor. It goes without saying that when filthy lucre and profits, along with bottom lines are being considered, there is that nagging temptation to give in to the urge to maximize, even at the expense of relationship, more insane profits down the road, or just honor, integrity, and having one's word be the commitment.

Never make a handshake deal with a rattlesnake.

everyone did it to Tesla...

As far as Edison,... the inventors were working for him, so sure, Edison does own the patents... But with Tesla, he misled him. and in the end got the best of him with the worlds fair lighting contract with AC current through.... Westinghouse... And then he did it to Tesla with Tesla's AC polyphase system .
