Ultra-thin Camera Creates Images Without Lenses

06/23/2017 10:44 AM

Interesting, optical phased array. It's been done with microwaves for a long time now.

"Engineers have built a camera that does not need lenses to focus light. It can switch from a fish-eye to a telephoto lens instantaneously."

It's only an 8x8 element "proof of concept" array and resolution is a very long way from lensed cameras. If it were scaled up, advantages other than thinness is that it could be refocused and steered in any direction.

"Traditional cameras -- even those on the thinnest of cell phones -- cannot be truly flat due to their optics: lenses that require a certain shape and size in order to function. At Caltech, engineers have developed a new camera design that replaces the lenses with an ultra-thin optical phased array (OPA). The OPA does computationally what lenses do using large pieces of glass: it manipulates incoming light to capture an image.

Lenses have a curve that bends the path of incoming light and focuses it onto a piece of film or, in the case of digital cameras, an image sensor. The OPA has a large array of light receivers, each of which can individually add a tightly controlled time delay (or phase shift) to the light it receives, enabling the camera to selectively look in different directions and focus on different things."

There is a device called a zone plate that works in a similar fashion. It's been around for a long time, but it (they) have always had a fixed 'focal length'.

A zone plate focuses light into an image by diffraction, but still needs some distance behind it to form an image.

This device controls the shift of the light phase for each sensor in an array and then sums them together in order to maximize the reception (or transmission) of light in a certain direction. The phase shifts are controlled so that the look direction raster scans, much like an old CRT television.

Here is the article that describes the theory and operation:

What an absolute gem.

imagine what OPA's could be used for in discrete surveillance cameras ?

construct them to replicate wallpaper , handbag leather , car steering wheel cover , tree bark , a rock ......

:)

Sounds like a plan...

There you go, being all ambitious and stuff. I find that I would rather be able to take a roadside pee without worrying also about cameras on the surface of stones.

We have enough to worry about with Mojave Desert Rattlesnakes now being found in Texas.

What the indigenous Texas rattlesnake looks like.

The rattlers can be dealt with, if we see them in time, but the camera, I say pee on it, or spit tobacco juice on it.

Zone plates use diffraction to as a means of adding waves in or out of phase. The pattern of the zone plate affects the interference pattern, which in turn determines the length and position of the (primary) focus point.

Radio telescopes have used phased arrays as a means of 'steering' or pointing an immovable array of antennae.

This camera is very cool in how it applies classic wave physics in an entirely modern way.

This seems just weird to me. I will need to study up on it a bit more.

WOW, really interesting, thanks.
